Pirates roll past IV PHOENIX � With middle hitters Leilani Saurman and Tiffany Ross dominating, Phoenix rolled past Illinois Valley 15-5, 15-7 in Skyline Conference volleyball. "They came right at us and we were able to stuff their attack early and made them make adjustments," said Phoenix coach Tom Murphy, "and they just weren�t as effective with their adjustments." Saurman had six kills and six blocks, while Ross added seven kills and three blocks for Phoenix (19-7, 9-3 Skyline). "We had a good night of blocking in the middle and did a good job of controlling the net," said Murphy. "Leilani really had her best night. She had a lot of blocks early that made a difference." Sutton Jackson was also powerful from her outside hitter position, posting a team-high nine kills for the Pirates. Illinois Valley led 3-0 in the first game before Phoenix rallied to take a 6-3 lead. The Pirates went up 9-3 in the second game before the Cougars closed to within 9-7. Kelsey Russell took over from that point, serving out the game as she finished the night 14-for-14 from the service line with one ace. "Kelsey served very tough," said Murphy. "They weren�t necessarily aces, but it kept them from getting into an offensive attack." ROGUE RIVER 16-15, MAZAMA 14-9 � At Rogue River, Rogue River rallied after being behind 10-3 in the opening set, then its serving took over in the second game. Senior Kelly Simmons led the Chiefs from the service line with a 15-for-16 effort, including 11 second-game points. Simmons added a team-high 14 digs. After Mazama jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the opener, Rogue River won 10 of the next 13 points to tie it at 13. The Vikings surged ahead 14-13, before Simmons served the 14th and 15th point. A Mazama missed serve gave the ball back to the Chiefs, and Becky Grinde ended the match on her serve. Sophomore Katie Glasscock led the Chiefs front row with eight kills and Ashleigh Artoff compiled 20 assists. Grinde was 7 of 7 serving and contributed eight digs. NORTH VALLEY 15-15, HIDDEN VALLEY 6-6 � At Merlin, North Valley�s two middle hitters dominated for a convincing Skyline win. Knight junior Whitney Coston had nine kills and freshman Elaina Renius notched five kills and five blocks. Senior Megan Coston served four aces and led the Knights in digs with seven. North Valley, 5-7 in Skyline, plays at Henley Tuesday. LAKEVIEW 15-15, HENLEY 9-11 � At Lakeview, sixth-ranked Lakeview avenged its only Skyline loss. In an earlier match, No. 4 Henley totally dominated the Honkers at the net. But in the rematch, Lakeview had a slight advantage in the front row. Henley had leads of 5-4 in the opener and 7-3 in the second game. Sophomore setter Megan Albertson provided the Honkers seven kills, 10 of 10 serving and 15 assists. Lakeview sophomore outside Jess Childress contributed seven kills, while middle Kristi Albertson added five. Jamie Ruda also had five kills from the outside on the front row to go with 12 digs. Southern Cascade League ST. MARY�S 15-15, GILCHRIST 1-1 � It only took second-ranked St. Mary�s 22 minutes to register its eighth straight SCL victory and clinch at least a share of the league championship on Seniors Night at the Crusaders gym. St. Mary�s (19-4, 8-0 SCL) pounded 14 aces in the match, with Lani Brophy, Kristina Easton and Kim Hansen accounting for 13. In Game 1, Brophy served 10 straight points, including five on aces, to stake the Crusaders to a 10-0 lead. Easton�s three consecutive service points gave St. Mary�s a 7-0 lead in the second set, then Hansen served six straight. Jenny Gritsch sparked the Crusaders defensively with four digs. CASCADE CHRISTIAN 15-15, CHILOQUIN 11-6 � At Central Point, junior middle Kristin Salamone gave Chiloquin fits at the net with eight blocks and six kills as Cascade Christian avenged an early-season loss. Krystle Holtz, who served points 2 through 11 in the second game, had six kills and six assists for the ninth-ranked Challengers (16-3, 6-2 SCL). Cascade�s Whitney Brookins had 26 assists and the Challengers received some effective passing from Kelly Clarke. Cascade Christian benefitted from 92 percent serving and its quick offense at the net.
