The man, whose identity was not released Monday, had told police that he was being followed by unknown people. Several north Weed residents also telephoned police saying a man was acting strangely in their East Louis Road neighborhood, according to the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Department. Police eventually found the man hiding under a clump of roots in chin-deep water, dressed only in pants, a shirt and socks, deputies said. The man resisted police’s assistance, but later slipped into unconsciousness and was pronounced dead about an hour later at Fairchild Medical Center in Yreka, deputies said. The man had no known history of mental illness, sheriff’s department spokeswoman Susan Gravenkamp said Monday. An autopsy could be done as early as today, and toxicology tests could help answer why the man acted that way, Gravenkamp said. The man’s name was not released because detectives were having trouble locating any next of kin, and they were trying to locate relatives somewhere in Southern California, Gravenkamp said. The man lived with his girlfriend in Weed, police said.
