Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend October 11, 2005 Since You Asked Delphi provides ‘solutions’ A news brief in Sunday’s paper announced that Delphi Corp., "the nation’s largest auto supplier," was taking bankruptcy. Who or what is Delphi? What kind of automobiles/trucks do they manufacture? Have I been living in a vacuum for the past 70 years? I’ve never heard of a Delphi, or never heard of Delphi, Corp. for that mater. — Neill S., Medford According to delphi.com, the company "provides comprehensive product solutions to complex customer needs." Apologies to Delphi, but "solutions" has become quite a horrible clich� and is a word that says absolutely nothing — which our wordsmiths at SYA Headquarters loathe. So we dug a little deeper. According to Hoover’s, "Delphi Corp. (formerly Delphi Automotive Systems) has taken to the road alone after being spun off from General Motors in 1999. The world’s largest maker of auto parts, Delphi manufactures virtually everything mechanical or electrical that goes into cars. Its primary business divisions include its Dynamics, Propulsion & Thermal division (energy and engine management systems and chassis, steering, and thermal systems products) and its Electrical, Electronics, Safety & Interior division (automotive electronics, audio, aftermarket products, safety, signal distribution, and communication systems). The bulk of Delphi’s business comes from former parent GM. Delphi has approximately 185,000 employees and operates 167 wholly owned manufacturing sites, 41 joint ventures, 53 customer centers and sales offices and 33 technical centers in 38 countries, according to Delphi’s Web site. OK, so we agree with Delphi. "Solutions" sounds a lot sexier than "auto parts." Still, let’s all agree to never use "solutions" in ad copywriting ever again, OK?
