BOYS HOOPS: North Medford halts winless skid By Mail Tribune staff Updated: Dec 20, 2022 08:49 PM A A LAKE OSWEGO — After several close-but-no-cigar moments for the North Medford boys basketball team, everything seemed to finally come together Tuesday afternoon — much to the delight of the Black Tornado and head coach Scott Plankenhorn. North Medford built a 23-13 lead through one quarter on McDaniel and never relinquished it en route to an 86-59 victory — North’s first win after starting the season 0-6. “We actually looked like a basketball team a little bit today,” said coach Plankenhorn, whose team was playing its second of three games in the Lakeridge Tournament. Junior wing Houston Klug provided an early lift for the Black Tornado (1-6), scoring 13 of his game-high 26 points in the first quarter. Klug had 20 points in the first half alone. “He was aggressive and taking it to the basket,” said coach Plankenhorn, “and our defense was a little more solid and that got us into some transition baskets.” Junior point guard Andrew Plankenhorn joined Klug in scoring seven points in the second quarter to help extend North’s lead to 48-26 at the break. Plankenhorn finished with 16 points. North had been averaging 50 points per game through its first six games. “It was big,” said coach Plankenhorn of breaking the winless drought. “We’ve been used to a lot of winning so all of a sudden going through this stretch with difficult losses, it’s been rough. The games had all been within striking distance except for Westview and we just hadn’t been able to get over the hump and it would snowball. Today we didn’t let ourselves get into that situation.” The teams combined for 26 3-pointers but North had a higher success rate and was able to get out into transition thanks to long rebounds off misses by McDaniel (0-8), which had Jaylen Pankey net 25 points. North wraps up the Lakeridge tourney at 4 p.m. Wednesday against Sunset. GRANTS PASS 46, ASHLAND 43: At Ashland, Grants Pass and Ashland battled back-and-forth down the stretch in a well-played nonleague test for both teams before the Cavemen were able to dodge a final pair of good tying looks by the Grizzlies on their home court. Izzy Golden scored 25 points to lead Ashland (5-3) but hopes of a sixth 3-pointer in the game were dashed in the closing moments. The Grizzlies had rallied from a 32-21 deficit in the third quarter behind Golden’s scoring, which included a four-point play to end the third quarter at the buzzer to bring Ashland within 35-32. Grants Pass (7-1) actually gave up the lead momentarily in the fourth but a three-point play by Mason Bennett, who had 11 points, tied the game with just under two minutes to play at 43-all. Gavin Mclean and Luke Morgan each added 10 points for the Cavemen. GRANTS PASS (46): Isley 6, McLean 10, Bruner 5, Bennett 11, Polen 2, Brandes 2, Morgan 10. Totals: 18 6-10 46.
