LOCAL BRIEFS Local news briefs: World Day of Prayer set for March 4 in Ashland Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Feb. 20, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Feb. 20, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News World Day of Prayer set for March 4 in Ashland A local World Day of Prayer service is scheduled for Friday, March 4, at Calvin Hall at the First Presbyterian Church, 1615 Clark Ave., Ashland. The ecumenical service will begin at 1 p.m. with refreshments and fellowship time to follow. A liturgy written by women from Cuba will be used in gatherings around the globe. The theme, “Receive Children, Receive Me,” is based on the story of Jesus’ welcoming the children his disciples had turned away. The local service, hosted by Presbyterian Women, will be led by women and girls from six different Christian traditions. All who wish to share in the service are welcome. Home Show continues today and Sunday CENTRAL POINT — Rogue Valley residents have a chance to get practical advice and ideas about home and yard projects they've always dreamed about this weekend at the 34th annual Southern Oregon Home Show at The Expo. Along with building, remodeling, landscaping and decorating ideas and materials, there are hundreds of home-improvement and landscaping exhibits, product demonstrations and sample interior and exterior displays. The event is organized by the Home Builders Association of Jackson County, and exhibitors come from throughout Oregon, as well as California and Washington. The organization's first Home Show was held at the old Holiday Inn Convention Center in April 1983. It later moved to the Oregon National Guard Armory, where it became a February staple. The Home Show moved to The Expo in 2003. Seminars will cover aeroponic growing, products that may enhance independent living for older adults, window coverings, solar, building a sustainable home, countertops and professional painting tips. The show began Friday and continues from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $3. For details, see the home builders' website at www.hbajc.com/home-shows.html . Master Recycler class starts March 8 Jackson County Recycling Partnership is seeking people to take part in its annual training course and volunteer service program to become Master Recyclers. Participants gain a broad understanding of home waste-prevention strategies, the local solid-waste infrastructure, hazardous-waste avoidance, composting, plastics, e-waste and more. The annual course offers a training manual, discussion-based classes, presentations from regional experts and field trips to the regional landfill, waste-to-energy plant and composting facilities. Master Recyclers give 30 service hours in their neighborhoods, workplaces and schools and support countywide waste-prevention projects over the course of a year to complete their training. Since 2008, more than 200 volunteers have become waste-prevention ambassadors in Jackson County. Weekly classes will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, March 8 through May 17, at the Rogue Disposal & Recycling headquarters at One West Main in downtown Medford.
