Phoenix lights up the scoreboard in win over IV CAVE JUNCTION - The Phoenix Pirates scored early and late to pin an 18-11 defeat on Illinois Valley Wednesday in a Skyline Conference game that featured 25 hits, six errors and 10 hit batsmen. Cleanup hitter Jason Wolford cracked a pair of doubles and a triple to pace the Pirates' 13-hit attack. Phoenix took advantage of the wildness of Illinois Valley starting pitcher Doug Hedrick, who hit eight batters. The Pirates led 10-2 after three innings before the host Cougars rallied for one run in the fourth and five in the fifth to get within 10-8. But Phoenix blew the game open with a six-run seventh. "We scared them a little, I think, but all that did was wake them up," said Illinois Valley coach Scott Carnes, whose team fell to 2-13 in conference play. "I was pleased with our effort, though. We kept battling." Illinois Valley leadoff hitter Matt Marvin went 4-for-5 with a double, triple and two RBIs. Ryan Skiles, the Cougars' No. 9 hitter, went 3-for-3 and scored four times. For Phoenix (11-4 Skyline), Kessler, Nathan Emerson and Ian McPhae all had two hits.
