Indians use height advantage in 22-point romp By TED BURNHAM for the Mail Tribune If you've got half a foot on the competition, you might as well use it. The Roseburg boys basketball team used its size to push around a much smaller North Medford team Tuesday night, drawing two dozen fouls and hitting 24 free throws en route to a 64-42 victory at Lacy Court. Roseburg seniors Brennan Garrelts and Joe Newton, both 6 foot 7, combined for 40 points and a dozen rebounds. Newton had 23 points while Garrelts pulled down eight rebounds for the Indians (6-6 overall, 2-1 Southern Oregon Conference). Senior guard Zach Rettmann hit four 3-point goals to lead the Black Tornado (4-8, 1-2) with 15 points. Sophomore post Ryan Lucas added nine points and senior center Gabe Burchfiel, at 6-4 the only North starter over 6-2, added six points and pulled down eight rebounds. "We are starting to play better but we still have a ways to go," Garrelts said. "As a team we just need to play as one unit. Our defense controls our tempo - it's all defense. I felt we battled well inside." Rettmann, the only player on the court to hit 3-pointers, said North "gave it our all." He admitted, however, that matching up with the likes of Newton and Garrelts is difficult. "We came out and played with what we have got," he said. "(Newton) is a big guy. You have got to put two or three guys on him and sometimes even that doesn't work." "You hope you can go out and foul the right guy. Unfortunately the guy made the free throws." After missing his first three free throws, Newton went 8-of-9 from the line before missing his final three. North Medford junior Jeff Deline and senior Aaron Barlow started in place of senior guards Brian Weeks and Zach Taylor, who sat out for "disciplinary reasons," according to North Medford coach Tim Sam, who said he was pleased with the team's effort. "We gave ourselves a chance," Sam said. "We got to the free-throw line in the third quarter and could have cut it to five. "We just have to work harder on executing. We need to box out every single time. We need to get most of the rebounds, not (some) of the rebounds." Roseburg had 40 rebounds and 17 turnovers while North grabbed 26 rebounds and committed 19 turnovers. After winning the tip-off, Garrelts and senior wing Garrett Stembridge each had two baskets to help Roseburg move ahead 12-8 in the first quarter. Rettmann hit back-to-back 3-pointers midway through the second quarter, but the Indians outscored North 7-2 in the final two minutes of the half. Down 25-17 at halftime, North trailed by fewer than 10 points through most of the third quarter, thanks to two more 3-pointers by Rettmann. Roseburg led 40-29 after three quarters. Garrelts had three baskets in less than 90 seconds early in the fourth quarter and a Newton dunk put Roseburg up 48-34 with four minutes remaining. The Black Tornado defense disintegrated and two North players fouled out as Roseburg outscored North 16-8 to wrap up the contest. "I think we played pretty good defense and we rebounded well," Roseburg coach Mike Pardon said. "We just stayed with it. We got the ball to the right people at certain points in the game. "With our size we should be able to get the ball and go in, then go to the line a few times, and we did that tonight." South Medford (12-1, 3-0) plays host to North at 7 p.m. on Friday.
