Raider women triumph Raider roundup ASHLAND -- Coaches always preach the importance of free throws. Typically a stellar squad from the charity stripe, the Southern Oregon women's basketball team cashed in on that presence Saturday as the seventh-ranked Raiders topped No. 23 Holy Names, 68-58. Playing in front of 600 at McNeal Pavilion, Southern Oregon opened a 34-25 halftime lead and then withstood a comeback by Holy Names thanks to SOU's 18-of-25 effort from the free-throw line in the second half. "That was the big thing in the second half," SOU coach Shirley Huyett said of her team's charity efforts. "We missed some early in the first half and early in the second half, but when we really needed them we put 'em down." Sarah Petersen scored 14 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to help the Raiders remain perfect on the season at 2-0 in non-conference play. Ashley Nunley added 10 points and six rebounds and Ali Richards had 11 points and seven steals as each team struggled from the floor by converting only 35 percent of their attempts. Holy Names (1-1) outrebounded SOU 51-40, but fell well shy of the Raiders at the charity stripe by connecting on only 12-of-21 attempts. The Hawks' edge in athleticism helped keep the game close, forcing the Raiders into an uncomfortable shooting rhythm. "We were trying to rush some shots before they could get to us," Huyett said of her team's cold shooting from the field. "They play really tough defense and we didn't have many open shots tonight."
