Comets roll past Panthers The Crater Comets have been the hard-luck volleyball team in the Southern Oregon Conference the past four years. They've finished fifth each year, one spot out of the state playoffs. Perhaps this is the year they break through. Senior outside hitter Addie Wiersma had six kills and junior outside hitter Erin Kinney added five as the Comets rolled to a 15-12, 15-6 victory over South Medford on Tuesday. The win comes five days after the Comets (5-6, 2-2 SOC) took conference favorite Roseburg to three games. "It's been so frustrating to be so close to a playoff berth and not get one," Crater coach Leaf Jensen said. "But this is my most athletic team, and these girls have high hopes." Defensive specialist Audrey Hop and Maggie Dunlap combined for 17 digs for the Comets, and Brandi Hall had six important points from the service line. South Medford (6-10, 1-4 SOC) was led by junior middles Jennie Brennan and Jessica Rickman, who had six and five kills, respectively. And defensive specialist Michelle Chancler played well from the back row. But Panthers coach Jerry Hagstrom wasn't happy. "Our mental focus was non-existent tonight," he said. "We weren't in the game." GRANTS PASS 11-15-15, NORTH MEDFORD 15-13-9 - At Grants Pass, Ally Codington had eight kills and four aces as Grants Pass rallied past North Medford. The third and decisive game was tied 9-9 when the Cavers (7-9, 3-2 SOC) rattled off the final six points to win the match. Ashley Bellum added seven kills, Jessica Morton had six and Kathy Richard chipped in five aces for Grants Pass. The Cavers are coached by Steve Levesque, who was the Black Tornado coach from 1986-93. Mary Patricia Junkin led the Indians (18-3, 5-0 SOC) with nine assists, while Kate Stone added seven. Stone and Taylor Jones also had two serving aces apiece.
