Top-ranked St. Mary’s needed one in its Southern Cascade League opener against Chiloquin Thursday after its star player, Garrett Fiddler, took an elbow to the face that opened a gash over an eye. The contact occurred just before halftime, and when Fiddler returned to action midway through the third quarter, he sparked a 59-44 triumph. St. Mary’s led only 28-25 when Fiddler returned. It then went on a 20-1 run. "I’m guessing he blocked five straight shots when he came back," said Crusaders coach Rick Jackson. Advertisement Fiddler finished with a triple-double of 14 points, 11 rebounds and 10 blocks. The game was rough and tumble from the outset — St. Mary’s attempted 45 free throws, making 33. But never was it so evident as when Fiddler was clocked. Fiddler’s father, Dan, a St. Mary’s assistant coach and an anesthesiologist, told Jackson his son needed stitches. "I wasn’t planning on him coming back," said Jackson. "I thought he was done for the night. I didn’t know what was going on. I went to the locker room and there was his 6-8 frame laid out on a bench. They were stitching him up." Neurosurgeon Doug Kirkpatrick, the father of the Crusaders’ Tim Kirkpatrick, did the handiwork, applying six stitches. After icing the wound for a bit, Fiddler was cleared to return. "We were struggling early in the third quarter," said Jackson. "Colin Grant did a nice job for us. He made a couple of buckets when we really needed them. When they were making a run, he sort of held them off while Garrett was out." The physical play led to several turnovers and resulted in Chiloquin baskets that inspired the home crowd, said Jackson. "We tried to stem the tide but didn’t do a very good job of it," he said. Garrett Childress scored 13 points, and A.J. Clemens and Craig Mill each scored 12 for the Honkers. Josh Heidegger scored a season-high 26 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Challengers (6-5, 0-1 SCL). Andrew Shipley added 12 points and Chris Buck grabbed eight rebounds. The Pirates (6-6) shot 29 percent (16 of 56) for the second straight game, but still were within two with 20 seconds to play. However, the Tigers made four free throws the rest of the way to seal it. Justin Krafft scored 17 points and Nathan Bursk 10 for Phoenix, which got eight rebounds from Marty Joseph.
