Illinois Valley stays perfect in Skyline after downing Phoenix in OT PHOENIX - Overtime is winning time for the Illinois Valley boys basketball team. With a 64-56 overtime victory at Phoenix on Friday night, the seventh-ranked Cougars improved to 5-0 this season in games undecided at regulation's end. "When we get to overtime, we're extremely confident," said IV head coach Jeff Brimhall, whose squad remained atop the Skyline Conference at 8-0 in league play and 14-3 overall. Three days after trailing by as many as 37 points in a 67-50 loss to the Cougars in Cave Junction, the Pirates (6-12, 2-6) gave IV all it could handle. "They had a lot more energy," Brimhall said. "They're young, but they're very talented and well-coached." Sophomore wing Martin Gonzalez continued his hot scoring with a 21-point outing, and junior post Brady Rhodes also tallied 21 points for Phoenix. The Pirates held a 25-22 edge at halftime, a 38-33 advantage entering the fourth quarter and led by six with about two minutes to play in regulation. Cougars senior guard Tyler Mikels drained a 3-pointer with 20 seconds left to tie it, and Phoenix committed a turnover on its final possession of regulation. In overtime, IV senior guard Justin Graven capped off a career-high 35-point eruption by scoring seven of the Cougars' 10 points. Despite the defeat, Pirates head coach Kevin Dixon said his squad is primed to make a run at a postseason berth during the second half of Skyline play. "It's a confidence-builder," said Dixon, who has just two seniors on his roster. "It's a great testament to the kids. ... I couldn't ask for anything more. We were ahead almost the whole game."
