Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend September 10, 2005 Eagles soar past Madison PORTLAND — Eagle Point scored in just about every way possible en route to a 53-20, runaway victory over Madison in nonconference football Friday. Kris Butler rushed for two touchdowns and returned a punt for another, Brandt Nevin tossed a 62-yard scoring pass to Mychal Williams and ran for another and, for the game’s highlight, D.J. Hill had a 101-yard interception return of a two-point conversion pass for a safety. "We did a good job of really putting the pressure on them and getting the early lead," said EP coach Harry Hedrick. "And with the offense they run (double wing), it made it hard for them to come back." Butler’s TD runs of 1 and 5 yards allowed Eagle Point (2-0) to take a 13-0 lead in the first quarter, with Williams’ touchdown reception and Nevin’s 18-yard scoring scamper building the lead to 25-0. Shane Bei added TD runs of 6 and 2 yards to boost EP’s advantage to 38-6 by halftime. Advertisement The Eagles used mainly their reserve players in the second half, finishing with 455 yards of total offense. Butler rushed for 118 yards on 12 carries and only returned punts in the second half — going 50 yards to open the scoring in the third quarter — while Nevin completed 8 of 9 passes for 145 yards in his two quarters of action. Ryan Smith added a 34-yard touchdown run to cap the scoring for Eagle Point, which opened a double-digit lead in the first half against South Salem last Friday en route to a 41-21 triumph. "Tonight’s game went a lot like the last one," said Hedrick. "We were really effective putting points up early and playing good defense and getting good production from our quarterback. Those are the things we’re going to need each week if we’re going to be successful." LINCOLN 36, CRATER 7 — At Portland, Lincoln scored all its points in about a five-minute span at the end of the second quarter and the beginning of the third. The teams were scoreless until about 2½ minutes to go before halftime when Cardinals quarterback Connor Kavanaugh hooked up with Elvis Akpla on a 20-yard scoring pass. After the Comets were forced to punt, Lincoln took over on the Crater 49. Three plays later, Kavanaugh found Akpla again for a 19-yard TD with about 40 seconds left in the quarter. The second half began as poorly as the first half ended for the Comets when King Hearvey returned the opening kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown. On the Comets’ next possession, quarterback Brian Theis fumbled on his 11-yard line, and Paul Partlow ran it in for another Lincoln touchdown. Crater turned the ball over again on its next series on a Theis interception, and Kavanaugh capitalized by tossing his third TD pass. Senior Callan Hartzer led the Comet ground attack with 54 yards on 10 carries, while junior receiver Tyler Davis caught seven passes for 50 yards. LAKE OSWEGO 35, GRANTS PASS 7 — At Grants Pass, Lake Oswego tailback Will Darkins notched three short touchdown runs as the Lakers opened up a 35-0 lead before Grants Pass finally broke through for a score with 2:37 to play. Lake Oswego also managed 261 yards passing to complement the running game and finished with 423 yards of total offense compared to only 114 for the host Cavemen (0-2). Grants Pass tailback Craig Dolmage was held to 17 yards on nine carries. CLACKAMAS 21, ROSEBURG 18 — At Clackamas, Roseburg put together a fourth-quarter rally, but fell just short in the nonleague game. Trailing 21-10, entering the final minutes, Roseburg drove the field and scored on a 1-yard run by Jimmy Zhu with 1½ minutes left. Brett Stephens then made good on a run for the two-point conversion, but Roseburg was unable to recover the onside kick. Clackamas ran for 273 yards, led by Alex Conard’s 154 on 22 carries. The Indians (1-1) scored on a 99-yard opening kickoff return by Adam Brink but failed to reach the end zone again until the final quarter.
