I was born in Fort i*ayse, Indiana, January 15, 1864.
My father Joe Murray, and my mother, Elisabeth Wein, more both
born in Ireland* May both same VD Fort Wee, Indiana when they
were both very yousg and grew up there.
They were serrAied in Fort Wayne, Indiana, (I do net know
the date) and their ohildres„ tmo boys and two girls, were born
there. I was their youngest shill.
My parents moved to Riehland Springs, in Sas Saba County,
Tomas, in LOSS, when I was *bout a year old. I have heard ny
mother say that they made the trip to Texae in **worst wegoas„
but I do not know whet tire of the yeor they made the trip. I
also remember my mother saying that Rieklend Springs was just a
wide plaee is the rood when they got there. ur father took op

The woods around our farm wee full of wild hogs, antelope,
buffalo and deer, in those days and we had ell the fresh meat that
we wanted, just by going out in the woods and shooting the wild

My father was a prise fighter end was killed in Portland

Besides Zoe Sloan and a foremast, named Lon Rountree, there
were eight cowboys cook and amen to take care of the horses.
It wns late in the fall when we left Richland Springs, TeJLes,

and crossed the cattle at San Angelo Times. we had no trouble

Joe Sloan was the only man in the bunch who Md. a gua.

were never bothered by then.

Fran Pontoon Crossing we went on by way of Pecos City, Texas,
this town is now called Pecos, Texas) and from there we headed
in a Northwestern direction for the Sacramento Mountains, in New
Mexico. The weather was getting cold and we needed protection for
the cattle, as some of them were getting pretty weak. lie passed
through Seven Rivers, New Mexico, which was about fifty miles north
of Roswell, New Mexico. Seven Rivers was in Lincoln County at that
time. From there we vent to the Penance country, in the Sacramento
mountains, in New Mexico, where (Toe Sloan left five hundred head
of tho weakest cattle in a pasture, for the winter. 4e came out
of the Sacramento mountains at Tula rose, New Mexico, and to the
north of the White Sands, through Mocking Bird Cep, in the Organ
mounteins. We watered at Mal Pais springs, which is just at the
foot of the Mel Pais, in the Organ Mountains, and from there we
bad to drive the cattle a distance of sixty five miles, without
water, until we reached the Rio Grande River. We crossed the
Rio Grande near what is now Hot Springs, New Mexico. At Lake Val-
ley New Mexico, we ran into am awful woe storm. This was in SUOMI
County. I left the berd,just after crossing the line of New Mex,
too and Arizona, at Duncan, Arizona.
I same back to Moonshine Springs, about thirty-five miles
east of Carrizozo, New Mexico, in Lincoln County. I stayed there
for a few days and then came over to the Bloek Ranch* which is on
the north side of the Capitan Mountains. in Lincoln County. This
was in the spring of 1888. I went to work as a cow boy on the
Block Ranch that spring. This was a very large ranch and was owned
by the Thurber Brothers, of New York City. I do not remember the
exact length of time I worked for then.

I have worked fer every big cattle company in Lincoln
County. I have Ammo aothing but puseh cattle all wy I
never married and I Just drifted frac wee pltee to another until
the last ten years, whoa I got too old to ride the range.
At different tines I have worked for the following rasehers.
I was with the "TT" Cattle compasy, owned by lames Ores and Bum,
and located on Little Creek, whisk is Imester.lour miles south east
or Carrizozo, New Mexico. This is the sale rasa that was owned
by Pat Garrott in the early days.
I worked for the Bar W outfit, coned by W. C. MWDemald„
who was the first governor of War Mexico, after it beeeme a State.
This ranch is looated about throe quarters of a mile west of
Carrizono, New Mexico.
I worked for the Ehtehet Cattle Company, owned by the
Thatcher Brothers, Of Pueblo, Colsmade. This rasa is losaled
about twenty eight miles south of Carrixono, New Voxleo, at Three
livers, New Mexico.
I worked for many rears at these pin ass. I hale lived in
Lineoln County for the past fifty years. Of all my family only
my brother Tom, and myself are um itf two sisters died whet
they were both young. My brother still lives on our old home plea:
