November 04. 2014 2:00AM Richard O. Weed Sr. Richard O. "Dick" Weed Sr. passed away Friday October 31, 2014 at his home in Medford with his wife Emma Jean "E.J." at his side. Dick was born in Klamath Falls, Ore. September 22, 1934, to Raymond D. "Ray" and Dicksy O. (Dryden) Weed. His maternal grandparents, C. O. and Stella Dryden, were very active in his care and education during his early years. Dick graduated from Klamath Union High School in 1953 and almost immediately enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He spent 21 years in the Navy as a Naval Air Controlman, retiring in 1972. He served in many different locations, most notably during the Vietnam War as a forward air controller in Da Nang and at Cam Ranh Bay, where he was in charge of the tower. He returned to Whidbey Island Naval Air Station and was on the Admiral's staff for his final duty. After his retirement, Dick moved back to Klamath Falls, where he earned an associate's degree in accounting plus an associate's degree of arts from Oregon Technical Institute. He then went to work for the state of Oregon as an auditor for the State Department of Education, living in Woodburn and Keizer. In 1983, following the death of his mother, he moved back to southern Oregon. In November of that year, he married Emma Jean and settled in Medford with her. During his younger years, Dick was very active in the Boy Scouts and earned both a Pro Deo et Patria and his Eagle Scout award. Throughout his life Dick was involved in Search and Rescue operations, both as a Boy Scout and in the Navy. Dick was a member of the Klamath Lutheran Church as a young man and later became a member of the Medford Congregational UCC. He and E. J. were active for many years with the Southern Oregon Presbyterian Marriage Encounter. Throughout his life, Dick had a great love of travel, both in the U.S. and abroad, and with his experiences in the military and in civilian life. He was a passionate fan of live theater and choral performances, which included many different genres of music. In addition to his wife, E. J., at the family home in Medford, Dick is survived by three sons, Richard O. Weed Jr. (Taffy) of Independence, Ore., Vincent E. Weed of Salem, Ore., and Thomas A. Weed of Angel Camp, Calif. He is also survived by a sister, J. LaRayne Watts (Jim) of Raymond, Wash.; two granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren. Preceding Dick in death were his parents, Ray and Dicksy; sisters, Marla Coy (Bill) of Coos Bay, Ore. and Nancy Freeman of Klamath Falls, Ore.; and a great-grandson, Cameron. Inurnment and services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at the Eagle Point National Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.
