The Ashland High senior posted identical scores of 77 each day on the par-72 Trysting Tree Country Club course to finish tied for second at 10-over par with fellow Southern Oregon Conference competitor Justine Hix of Grants Pass. Defending state champion Rebecca Kim of McNary fired a spectacular 3-under round of 69 to overtake first-day leader Molly Boyle of Jesuit to win the individual title. Kim’s 36-hole score was even-par 144. Boyle, who had a two-shot lead over Kim after the opening round, ballooned to 83 the second day to finish fourth with a 12-over 156. Jesuit won the team title with a 648, while McNary finished second — two-shots behind. Ashland placed seventh (704) and North Medford was eighth (710). Johns posted her best finish in four trips to the state championship. "Stephanie (Johns) steps up when it comes to the big tournament," Ashland coach Stephanie Santos said. "You know she will pull through for you. She’s improved every year. She went as far as she could." Advertisement Santos was somewhat disappointed with the Grizzlies’ team finish. "Our goal was to finish in the top five," she said. "It’s the girls’ senior years and I wanted them to go out that way." North Medford coach Tim Sam was enthusiastic with the showing of senior Kacie Kinney and the Black Tornado’s team finish. Kinney, who had rounds of 78 and 83, tied for 13th with three other players at 161. Kinney led the entire tournament after the first nine holes Monday when she made the turn with a 1-under 35. "(Kinney) shot two of her lower rounds of the year at the state tournament," said Sam. "It was just fantastic for her senior year." North shot three strokes better than Ashland after the opening day and finished the tournament six shots behind the Grizzlies. "It’s as close as we’ve been to Ashland," said Sam. "It was a tremendous two days for us. Going into the tournament I thought if we played our minds out we would have a chance to break into the top 10. If it’s not the top finish in North Medford history, it’s probably one of the best." CLASS 3A/2A/1A STATE TOURNAMENT — At Redmond, Miranda Akerman of Phoenix recovered from a disappointing first day to fire a 79 to tie for ninth overall. Akerman posted a two-day total of 171. Hidden Valley entered the final day tied for ninth but dropped to 10th (834) in the tournament. Natalie Rest was the top Mustang golfer, finishing in 32nd place with a 191 total. Ariel Huff of North Valley placed 35th with a 194. Agatha Brezinksi of Wilsonville won the individual title with a 161. Jacqueline Olson finished second overall at 162 and led Sutherlin to the team championship. Compher placed 17th individually and helped Phoenix to sixth place in the final standings at the par-72 Eagle Crest Ridge Golf Course. Compher had rounds of 79 and 80 for a 15-over 159 total. Kris Kaufman, who fired a 77 the first day, struggled with an 87 to finish tied for 22nd with a 164. Siuslaw’s Jesse Schutte fired a 2-under 70 Tuesday for a 3-under total of 139 to lead the Vikings to the team title.
