Freshman placekicker Cody Bloom’s 18-yard field goal with 4:15 remaining was the game-winner in the first Mountaineer victory in Ashland since 1979. It allowed EOU (6-3) to post its best football campaign since 1980 and keep alive slim playoff hopes pending Monday’s final NAIA top-25 rating. Southern, which erased a 10-6 halftime deficit and staked a pair of nine-point second-half advantages, capped the school’s leanest year since 1994 with a 3-6 mark, including a season-ending three- game slide. After the Raiders reached paydirt on three consecutive possessions culminating with Mike Olson’s 44-yard pass from Brandon Griffith for a 26-17 edge with 14:20 left, senior running back Damien Johnson sparked the EOU comeback with an elusive 67-yard weaving scamper through the midfield muck at the 13:13 mark. Johnson, who opened the scoring late in the first quarter with a 2-yard run, finished with 117 yards on 19 attempts. Junior quarterback Scott Jensen threw for 249 yards and rushed for 51 to lead the 421-yard Eastern offensive output. Advertisement Griffith finished with 234 passing yards and three touchdowns, while redshirt-freshman tailback Jacobe Krizman netted 96 rushing yards and scored from 13 yards out in the second quarter. SOU amassed 402 total yards. Volleyball ALBERTSON 30-30-30, SOUTHERN OREGON 27-16-21 — At Caldwell, Idaho, with the Cascade Conference regular-season title already under its belt, the 21st-ranked Southern Oregon University volleyball team cleared the bench in the regular-season finale at Albertson College. The Raiders, who will host the six-team league tournament starting next Friday at McNeal Pavilion, were limited to a season-low .094 hitting percentage despite a nine-kill effort by senior outside hitter Kristin Ferris. The Coyotes broke a 24-all tie in Game 1 with a Fran Hartman ace and two SOU hitting errors. ACI jumped out to an 18-7 lead in Game 2 and won Game 3 thanks in part to a 10-1 run. All 13 players in uniform saw action for SOU, which fell to 20-6 overall and finished with a 15-3 conference mark. Albertson (18-7, 14-4) remained unbeaten in Caldwell at 11-0 and extended their winning streak to nine matches. The Coyotes were led by Ashlea Thornton and Hartman, who had 12 and 11 kills, respectively.
