The undefeated and third-ranked Panthers jumped to an 8-0 lead against the visiting Lava Bears and never let up in administering an 88-40 thrashing of the Intermountain League opponent. Hot-shooting senior wing Caleb Berkey scored 16 points to lead five Panthers in double figures. South Medford (4-0) shot 55 percent from the field on 33-of-60 shooting. Of South’s 16 field goals in the first half, 13 came off assists. And for the game the Panthers had 24 assists. Advertisement "Our assist-to-shot ratio was huge," said South Medford coach Dennis Murphy. "It tells us how we’re starting to come together. We’re getting the ball to the open man and letting him finish." Berkey was 6 of 9 from the field, including 4 of 6 from 3-point range. "Berkey’s shooting was very impressive," said Murphy. "Each game his confidence grows." Freshman Kyle Singler posted a double-double for the Panthers with 13 points and 13 rebounds. "(Singler) doesn’t look like a freshman and he doesn’t play like a freshman," Murphy said. Ryan Fiegi provided South with some important contributions in several areas. The 6-foot-5 senior point guard handed out a team-high eight assists to go with 11 points, five steals and three rebounds. And sophomore Brent Johnson came off the bench to provide South 14 points and four rebounds. Johnson hit 5 of 9 shots from the field and made all four free throws. "It was a breakout game for Brent Johnson," said Murphy. "He relaxed more and allowed the game to come to him." South posted a commanding 37-17 advantage in rebounding. "We’re really spreading the ball around and getting good contributions from everyone," said Murphy. "We keep challenging our players to get better." The junior wing helped himself with a 6- of-7 performance from the line. Also in double figures for the Grizzlies (2-1) were Jeff Skinner and Josh Cornelius with 10 points each. PHOENIX 67, ROGUE RIVER 55 — At Yreka, Calif., Brett Ellis scored 19 points and Mike Smith added 18 as Phoenix coasted to a win over Skyline foe Rogue River in the third-place game of the eight-team Yreka Tournament. The Pirates (6-1), saddled with their first loss on Friday, used a 26-16 run in the fourth quarter to break open a tight game. Rogue River (3-4) grabbed a three-point lead after one quarter, but fell behind 32-25 at the half. The Phoenix defense wreaked havoc, causing 25 turnovers and collecting 19 steals. Besides his scoring output, Smith blocked three shots and picked up four steals. Jason Locket finished with 13 points, six rebounds and four steals. Lockett and Ellis were named to the all-tournament team. Ryan Girodat and J.T. Vaughn scored 15 and 13 points, respectively, to lead Rogue River. Cascade Christian went into halftime with a 35-18 advantage and never let up. Brandon Fair racked up a career-high 12 assists for Cascade Christian, pulling in a double-double with his 11 points. Cory Hull led all scorers with 16 points off the Eagle bench, and Kyle Libra and Ryan Pugh each scored 13. The Crusaders were led by Austin Grant’s 11 points and four assists.
