I’m involved in property management, but the solution is not to put additional burdens on property owners. They currently have to contend with renters who trash the property and don’t pay rent. It takes forever to evict. Owners now have to take HUD, and don’t get compensated for additional expense. They can’t collect a pet deposit for "service animals." If the owner can’t at least break even, that property will be taken off the market, making the situation worse. The solution is to build more properties, but my friends that do that sort of thing say the government hoops they have to jump through are ridiculous and take forever. Let’s not create more regulations; just get the government out of the way and the problem will solve itself. To my liberal friends who suggest other people do things to achieve their goals, they should be proactive. If owners are not doing the right thing, the progressives should buy all the properties and charge low rents and deal with all the problems. Larry Fields Medford Leaving a disaster Pope Francis is both popular and controversial for urging us to help the poor and be good stewards of our planet. It’s unlikely his appeal for action on global warming, environmental degradation, and social justice opened any hearts in a Congress so corrupted by corporate financing, but at least nobody yelled “You lie!” The unprincipled pursuit of profit, especially from fossil fuels, is poisoning our air and water, ravaging the landscape and adversely altering the climate. This has enriched the 1 percent, but is rendering our planet uninhabitable. Fifty years ago, CEOs made 20 times more than the average worker. Now they make 350 times more. When the economy crashes, our loss is their gain. In the trickle-down, deregulated “free” market, voodoo economics currently favored by Republicans, the entire Earth is the loser. Don’t be deceived by demagogues who cynically exploit fear and hatred. The greatest threat we face comes not from Muslims or immigrants, but from the environmental and economic devastation inflicted by unfettered greed and capitalism without conscience. Pope Francis describes it as the overriding moral issue of our time. We’re leaving our children a disaster. We need leaders who aren’t afraid to address it. Michael Steely Medford It's common sense A recent letter to the editor on the subject of global warming used the term "proxy data" without any explanation of the term, but with the clear implication that proxy data is somehow bogus. But you really don't need any data, bogus or otherwise, to see global warming in action. Just drive to work in the morning and you will be one of over 1 billion autos spewing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. If you are still working in 2035 your car will be one of over 2 billion on the road, not to mention trucks, airplanes and everything else running on fossil fuels. Global warming caused by humans? It's just common sense. Let's quit talking about the cause so we can figure out what to do. Steve Bull Medford Money talks louder The Sept. 28 issue of the Mail Tribune had a letter to the editor from yet another person who doubts the scientific evidence that climate change is man-made. It also had a cartoon about denying the effect that fossil fuels have on climate. How appropriate that one of the front-page stories in this same edition was regarding the Forest Service and timber companies discounting scientific research which suggests salvage logging, spraying and replanting after a forest fire is more harmful to our forests than letting Mother Nature repair them on her own. How sad that money still talks louder than scientists.
