South rally falls short at Roseburg Wednesday Jan 17, 2018 at 2:00 AM ROSEBURG — After trailing by 12 points in the third quarter, South Medford trimmed its deficit to one in the final minute of the fourth quarter but missed three shots that could have either won or tied the game, losing 54-50 to Roseburg in Tuesday’s Southwest Conference boys basketball contest. Sherman Hunter, a sophomore guard, had four 3-pointers and 18 points to pace the Panthers (5-10, 1-3 SWC), who fell behind in the first half after starting the game flat, South coach James Wightman said. “We’re showing signs that we’re getting better, but these guys have to learn how to win,” Wightman said. “We just have to learn how to finish games.” Also for South, senior post Jesse Higgins contributed a solid all-around effort with 11 points, five assists and seven rebounds and senior guard Robbie Patterson scored 12. Junior guard Collin Warmouth finished with a game-high 21 points and senior guard Cody Johnson chipped in 16 points for the Indians (10-5, 1-2). CRATER 81, CHURCHILL 65: At Eugene, senior Kiefer Edwards had a strong all-around game and scored 26 points to lead five Crater players in double figures during the Midwestern League road victory. Edwards was 8-for-14 from the field, 8-for-10 from the free-throw line and grabbed 12 rebounds, including five on the offensive end. The Comets (12-1, 2-1 MWL) erased a two-point first-quarter deficit by outscoring Churchill 47-28 in the second and third quarters. Crater made 14 3-pointers. Crater’s Nathan Bittle, a freshman forward, added 16 points and eight rebounds. Bittle was 4-for-4 from 3-point range. The Challengers (10-5, 3-0 SCL) grabbed a 26-12 lead at the end of the opening period and continued to exploit the Illinois Valley zone defense inside and out. Ben Dunn, a senior forward, paced the Challengers with 16 points and Joel McLemore added 14.
