After several delays, including a last-minute postponement in September, Repp’s trial will open at 9 a.m. today with jury selection in Jackson County Circuit Court. The trial is expected to run through Feb. 27. Repp, 34, faces one count of murder in the death of 29-year-old Kerry Michele Repp of Central Point. Kerry Repp was three months pregnant at the time of her slaying, family members said. A new OSP recruit, Gary Repp Jr. was arrested 12 days after Kerry was found shot to death in their Hazel Street home the afternoon of May 4, 2002. The couple’s two children were at a T-ball game when Kerry’s father, Ron Johnson, went to her home and discovered her body, police said. Gary Repp Jr. — an Oregon Army National Guard captain — was to leave that week for a peacekeeping mission in Egypt. An alibi was intended as Repp’s defense, according to court documents filed shortly before the case’s last postponement on Sept. 15, a day before the trial was scheduled to start. Jackson County Circuit Court Judge Lorenzo Mejia put off the trial when new evidence was discovered at the last minute. Attorneys on both sides of the case refused to discuss the new evidence. Advertisement Police said Kerry Repp had been shot more than once with a handgun found at the scene. Police have refused to discuss what the dispatcher heard on the line during a 9-1-1 call from the crime scene. An officer was not sent to check on the residence after the call, as is required by the police department’s policy. The dispatcher no longer works for the city of Medford, which answers Central Point’s 9-1-1 calls and dispatches police officers there. District Attorney Mark Huddleston has refused to allow the media to listen to the recorded call, which was seized as evidence. Recovering from some recent injuries to his back, knee and ankle, Huddleston will try the case from a wheelchair. Huddleston said he fell from a ladder a few days after Christmas while pruning a willow in his backyard. Medford attorney Carl Caplan represents Gary Repp Jr., who has remained in the Jackson County Jail without bail since his arrest. If convicted, Repp faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. The death penalty is reserved for Oregon’s most serious crime — aggravated murder — which includes the killing of children, police officers or more than one person in the same crime. Kerry Repp’s parents have petitioned state legislators to introduce a bill that would make killing a pregnant woman a double murder in Oregon.
