Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend February 17, 2006 Eagle Point bar owner recovers from savage beating By CHRIS CONRAD Mail Tribune EAGLE POINT — Eighty-five-year-old Edgar Dahack went to work this week less than a month after a intruder’s violent attack left his face looking like it had been "run through a meat grinder." Those are Dahack’s words used to describe what he saw in the mirror soon after the beating, which occurred Jan. 21 at his home in the 800 block of South Royal Avenue. Jeffrey Lynn Grant, 44, the primary suspect in the case, was arraigned Wednesday in Jackson County Circuit Court on charges of felony assault, robbery and burglary. Contacts in the local drug scene led police to Grant, who has lived in the area for many years, Eagle Point Police Chief David Strand said. His last known address was on Blackwell Road in Central Point. On the night of the beating, Dahack had just returned home after closing down Ed’s Oasis, the bar his family has owned for more than 50 years. He immediately noticed things inside his house had been moved around. Advertisement He grabbed a flashlight to check the doors and windows outside for signs of a break-in. After finding nothing suspicious, he re-entered his home. "And here’s this guy coming at me to make a football tackle," he said. The mask-wearing burglar smashed Dahack over the head with a leaded-crystal decanter. The blow tore a gash in his head that took 200 stitches to close. Dahack hit the floor and the beating continued. "All I can remember is he kept kicking me and kicking me." The blows knocked out two teeth, tore away half of one ear and broke his nose. Dahack believes he may have been attacked by more than one person that night. Eagle Point police haven’t named any other suspects. Grant allegedly took Dahack’s wallet, which contained more than $1,000, and made off with some silverware, Strand said. Dahack said he lay on the floor for close to two hours before he was able to collect himself enough to dial 9-1-1. He had lost a lot of blood and was dazed from the beating. Rescue workers transported him to the hospital, where he endured a five-hour operation. "Ed is probably one of the toughest men I’ve ever met," Strand said. The damage to his head has affected Dahack’s equilibrium, making a cane necessary for walking. "I’m still alive," Dahack said. "I must have a helluva hard head." He recently returned to Ed’s Oasis to do the bookkeeping. His employees are glad to have their boss back. "Everyone was worried sick ... and praying for him," said Barbara Adams, Ed’s Oasis’ daytime bartender. Grant has past convictions for drug delivery and possession. In 2003, he was sentenced to 26 months in prison for delivery of methamphetamine. If convicted of the most serious charges in this case he would serve a mandatory 7½ years in prison. Dahack said he has known Grant for several years. And though they are not close friends, their interactions have always been cordial, he said. "In fact, I’ve lent him 40 bucks and helped him with gas three or four times," Dahack added.
