Eagle Point, Phoenix come up short in Oregon Classic PORTLAND Jackson Countys two top-ranked dual meet wrestling teams came up short in the Oregon Wrestling Classic Saturday at Memorial Coliseum. Eagle Point defeated Marshfield, 32-24, for third place in the Class 4A competition. That came after a 34-25 semifinal loss to Canby. Newberg defeated Canby, 40-22, for the championship. In 3A competition, Phoenix made it past La Grande, 42-25, in the semifinals, but faltered against Sweet Home, 47-25, in the finals. Eagle Point was not at full strength. "It was a little disappointing not to win," said Eagle Point assistant coach Robbie Cowden. "Whenever youre in a meet like this, you want to be in the finals. But we knew coming up here we didnt have our full varsity line-up. Andrew Larsen (119) and Jake Leonardo (125) were out of the tournament with the flu." Justin Sheile (103), Jamie Mannenbach (171/189) and heavyweight Blake Cam were all 5-0 during the Classic. Mannenbach collected four pins and a major decision, Sheile had two falls and three major decisions, and Cam had two pins and two major decisions. John Gallo (140), Chet McBee (145/152) and Tyson Nelson (160) were 4-1. McBee jumped up to 152 pounds against Marshfield, losing for just the second time this season.
