Heimlich, offense dazzle in OSU win Friday May 5, 2017 at 2:00 AM May 5, 2017 at 11:13 PM Staff reports CORVALLIS — Luke Heimlich struck out a career-best 12 and the Oregon State offense tallied 13 hits to send the top-ranked Beavers to an 8-0 win over California Friday at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The win pushed Oregon State to 36-4 overall and 19-3 in Pac-12 Conference play. The Beavers have won seven of their eight conference series openers and will be going for another Pac-12 series win on Saturday. OSU has won nine straight conference series dating back to 2016. The 3,423 in attendance marked a regular-season attendance record during the Goss Stadium era, surpassing the previous best of 3,420 last weekend against USC. Heimlich scattered seven hits and a walk in eight shutout innings. His 12 strikeouts surpassed his previous best of 11, reached against both Indiana and Ball State earlier this season. The junior now has 99 strikeouts to 19 walks in 88 1/3 innings this season. That effort got the lefty the win, pushing his mark to 7-1 on the year. Heimlich also lowered his ERA to 0.71. Offensively, the Beavers were led by Nick Madrigal and Michael Gretler, who each had three hits. KJ Harrison and Adley Rutschman had two apiece, with the latter recording a team-high three RBIs, two of which came on a double past the third-base bag in Oregon State’s four-run third inning. That third inning saw the Beavers send 10 to the plate, pushing the team’s lead to 6-0. OSU added two runs in the fourth when Christian Donahue singled, and then he and Jack Anderson pulled off a double steal with runners on the corners. Heimlich has been dominant as of late. The junior has allowed 10 hits and one run with five walks and 29 strikeouts over his last three outings. He’s tossed 23 1/3 innings over that stretch for an ERA of 0.39.
