Goldberg fueled a Phoenix comeback victory in the second game as the Pirates swept the Knights, 8-2 and 7-6, at Hagler-James Park. Goldberg possibly saved a run by making a running catch crashing into the left field wall in the top of the seventh of Game 2 to keep the North Valley lead at 6-5. Then he beat out an infield grounder by sliding into first base to get the winning rally started in the bottom of the seventh. Goldberg has been slowed by off-season shoulder surgery and has been banged up a bit after being hit by nine pitches this season. "(Goldberg) is a big kid and runs the bases well," Phoenix coach Joe Hagler said. "You could tell he wanted it real bad the way he beat out the grounder. That was a spark plug play." Advertisement In the seventh, Chad Walker reached on catcher interference following Goldberg’s infield hit and Ryan Soriano beat out a bunt to load the bases. After a foul-ball pop out, pinch-hitter D.J. Ferrin drilled a pitch into left field to score the tying and winning runs. Goldberg went 3-for-3, scored a run and had an RBI, while Soriano chipped in two hits and scored twice and Dan Ritchie had two hits, one run and one RBI. Freshman left-hander Jordan Lewis was forced into his first league start because of an ankle injury to Brenton Ferguson. Lewis allowed one earned run on three hits and struck out five through five innings. "(Lewis) kept us in the game," said Hagler. "I needed someone to step up into our No. 2 pitching spot and he showed good poise." In the opener, the Knights took a brief lead in the second inning when Nate Ellis walked and Josh Makepeace delivered an RBI double. But Phoenix (12-5, 8-3 Skyline) took command in the bottom of the inning by scoring five runs after two were out. Robert Woodward walked and Soriano was hit by a pitch to get the outburst started. Josh Lorton reached on a fielder’s choice and Woodward scored on an error on the play. Ryan Harvey walked to load the bases, then Dustin Smith cleared the bases with a double. Aaron Decker scored Smith with a single to complete the rally. Walker tossed a four-hitter with five strikeouts for the Pirates. "(Walker) was tough with his breaking ball and kept his fastball on the outside corner," said Hagler. "He never let them string a bunch of hits together." Goldberg had two hits for Phoenix in Game 1. In addition to his 10 strikeouts, Urbanik had two doubles and three RBIs in the first stanza. Kyler Kirchner had two doubles and Jake Sward added a double and two RBIs for Hidden Valley (6-11, 3-9 Skyline). Henley’s Josh Knapp accounted for a double and a triple in the opener, while Jimmy Mastroianni had a double in the nightcap. Kyle Hall and Danny Sha led the Challengers’ attack with three hits each and combined for five RBIs. Travis Wolf and Kyle Shroy had two hits and two RBIs each. Sophomore pitcher Aaron Grissom (1-2) allowed two hits and struck out 10 in the second game for Cascade Christian (8-7, 6-2 District 6). Brian Ziegler went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, while T.J. Orton, Brian Thomas and Wolf added two hits apiece for the Challengers.
