Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend September 10, 2005 North gambles and loses at Central Catholic PORTLAND — The way North Medford’s football team was moving the ball against Central Catholic in the second half of Friday night’s game, it didn’t seem like a gamble to Rod Rumrey at the time. In hindsight, however, going for it on fourth-and-inches at the Black Tornado’s own 26-yard line with about seven minutes to play turned out to be the nail in North’s coffin against the host Rams at PGE Park. An otherwise stellar night by tailback/linebacker Ryan Folsom took a half-step backward as the senior was hit at the line of scrimmage and had the ball leak away to Central Catholic. Despite a determined effort by North’s defense, the Rams were able to pad a 21-13 lead with a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Kevin Dowsett and keep the Black Tornado at bay for a 27-13 victory. "It was fourth-and-one, and I knew in the second half they hadn’t held us to 3 yards or less on any carry, and it seemed like a no- brainer," said Rumrey. "Looking back on it, I wish I had done something different." Advertisement Folsom seemed like a good option. He rushed for 174 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries and was clearly the star of the game for a North team that fell behind early but dominated the second half. "Ryan Folsom played very, very good on both sides of the football," said Rumrey, adding that his offensive line did well to offset the Rams’ sturdy defense. While Folsom was busy making an impact on both sides of the ball, Central Catholic counterpart Brad Lindsey was doing the same as the senior raced for 197 yards and one TD on 24 carries. "He’s one of the best and quickest (running backs) I’ve seen in 35 years of coaching," Rumrey said of Lindsey, who stands 5-foot-10 and weighs 185 pounds. "I’ve seen a couple of good ones, but not too many a whole lot better than that kid." Lindsey kicked off the scoring with a 52-yard run as the Rams managed a 6-0 lead. He added a handful of other big runs throughout the night but was held to no gain or negative yardage on nine of his carries, thanks to solid efforts from Tim Endecott, Folsom, et al. on North’s defensive side of the ball. "If I wouldn’t have given them the short field (in the fourth quarter)," said Rumrey, "I’m pretty darn sure we would have shut them out in the second half, and that’s saying a lot about our defense because they’re a good team." Folsom’s first score, an 8-yard jaunt, allowed North to take a 7-6 lead in the first quarter. The advantage was short-lived, however, as Central Catholic’s Jaden Kaufmann returned the ensuing kick 92 yards for a touchdown. "The one time we had something going," said Rumrey, "two seconds later it completely changed." The Rams (1-0) tacked on a 21-yard scoring hookup from Dowsett to Andy Gonzales and a 22-yard field goal with about 90 seconds to go in the first half for a 21-7 lead at the intermission. North immediately answered in the third quarter as the Tornado capped a 67-yard drive with an 11-yard run by Folsom to make it 21-13. After holding the Rams, the Tornado managed a second straight drive deep into Central Catholic territory before stalling inside the 5. "It would have been interesting to see what would have happened if we could’ve tied it up right there," said Rumrey. North outgained the Rams 377-302 in total yardage, with junior quarterback Darren Bruhns rushing 12 times for 43 yards and completing 16 of 27 passes for 160 yards with two interceptions. A.J. Nichols caught eight of those passes for a team-high 75 yards.
