Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend October 27, 2005 Power outage shuts down Ruch School A power outage that knocked out electricity for 2,100 customers in the Ruch and Applegate areas closed Ruch School Wednesday. Wind and rain toppled a tree limb onto power distribution lines at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, bringing the lines down, Pacific Power spokesman Monte Mendenhall said. Inside the Ruch power substation, equipment that regulates voltage also failed. Crews repaired the fallen lines and hoped to have power restored to all customers by 9 a.m., but work to replace the insulator glass on the regulator took longer than initially expected, he said. Power was restored by 11 a.m. The school day started even without power to provide lights and heat and pump water from the school well, said Rich Miles, Medford’s director of elementary education. "We thought they could get by if it was just for an hour," he said. When school officials learned of the repair delays, they canceled school, called parents to notify them, and bused kids home, Miles said.
