Mail Tribune 100: Sept. 4, 1916 The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Sep. 4, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Sep. 4, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Sept. 4, 1916 FETCHING HEROINE IN STAR FEATURE "The Innocent Lie," by Lois Zellner, the latest of the Famous Players Paramount productions, was directed by Sidney-Olcott on the picturesque island of Bermuda. The exterior scenes are unsurpassably beautiful and with the spacious interior settings make an elaborate background for this appealing drama, which opens at the Star for the last time tonight. Miss Valentine Grant, who has won distinction in several previous photo dramas, appears as Nora O'Brien, a poor Irish lass. Her troubles commence upon her arrival in America when she is struck by a thug. Fortunately, however, she is picked up and cared for by the Winters family, who find a note addressed to them, on her person. Believing she is their cousin, the Winters discredit her truthful story that she was entrusted with the note by the genuine cousin. In a short time Nora becomes accustomed to her luxurious surroundings and is happy to think that her rightful identity remains unknown. Always bearing in mind the fate that might befall her should the discovery of her usurped position occur, Nora strives to please the family; this she accomplishes with but little effort. All her joyfulness disappears when her thieving, drunken brother puts in his appearance in a chauffeur's guise. He urges her to help him plunder the Winters residence, which Nora strongly refuses to do. Threatened with disclosure, Nora accedes to his demand and takes refuge in her brother's quarters. Mrs. Grant plays the role of Nora with remarkable skill and is supported by a notable cast, including Jack J. Clark, Morris Foster, Hunter Arden and Robert Cain. Her debut upon the Famous Players Paramount screen will undoubtedly be considered an auspicious one. A comedy titled, "Avenged by a Fish," completes the bill. LOCAL AND PERSONAL S. S. Smith has returned from Portland where he attended the meetings of the Oregon republican speakers bureau. His daughter, Mrs. Beaumont Delosh, of Aberdeen, Wash., returned, with him for a visit with her parents in Medford.
