Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Advertisement Email Story to a Friend January 26, 2005 Open manhole accident leaves man hospitalized CENTRAL POINT — The co-owner of a Medford construction firm was hospitalized Tuesday after striking his head on the rim of an open manhole following a head-first fall from a work van, officials and witnesses said. Stanley Sesar, 44, was listed in fair condition late Tuesday at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford, a nursing supervisor said. At about 2:30 p.m., Jackson County Fire District No. 3 crews responded to a construction site near the intersection of Valley Oak Boulevard and Griffin Oaks Drive after receiving a report that a man had fallen into a manhole. District 3 Engineer Rob English said Sesar lost consciousness and was bleeding from the head after slipping and falling head-first from a van at the site. Sesar’s injuries could have been far more severe if not for three co-workers who grabbed his legs as he went down. "All of him was in (the manhole) except for his legs," said Melvin Workman of Rogue Valley Sewer Services. "Thank God we caught him." Had Sesar not been caught, he would have fallen about 10 feet to the bottom of the manhole. "It was one of those freak things," Workman said. "I just hope he’s OK — that’s all that matters." Workman identified Sesar as co-owner of Visar Construction Co. in Medford.
