The predicted snow comes on the heels of significant snowfall at higher elevations in recent days. Mt. Ashland Ski Area reports it received 8 inches of snow between Thursday morning and today and 22 inches in the last seven days. The total snowfall at the ski area this winter is 174 inches, with the settled amount listed at 90 inches near the mountain summit. The National Weather Service predicts snow will fall at higher elevations throughout the coming week, although rising temperatures could produce rain this weekend, with freezing levels climbing to 6,000 to 7,000 feet by Sunday before dropping again early next week. The storms expected to hit this weekend will likely produce wet and heavy snow and occasionally be accompanied by strong winds, the NWS report says. While rain is expected in the Rogue Valley for the next several days, heavy rain is forecast over the weekend along Interstate 5 near Mount Shasta City and Dunsmuir. There is a chance of freezing rain east of the Cascades.
