Hanson won both the high jump and triple jump, while Hartford dominated the 100- and 200-meter dashes. SOU’s Kyle Gillette earned first and second place finishes in the 800 and 1,500, respectively. Nate Morrical claimed two first-place wins and a second-place victory for OIT. In women’s action, OIT beat SOU 113-53 behind a strong showing from Becky Schwartz, who placed first in the discus and the hammer throw and third in the shot put. Kasey Jones also won the high jump and javelin to pace the Owls, while former North Medford High standout Stephanie Jensen was second in the javelin and hammer throw. Advertisement SOU’s Emily Dunn won the 200 and placed second in the long jump and 100 to pace the Raiders, while teammate Breanne Cochran won the shot put and was second in the discus. Softball SOUTHERN OREGON 3-2-3, NOTRE DAME DE NAMUR 0-3-2 — At Ashland, the Southern Oregon University softball team used solid pitching to snatch two wins from Notre Dame de Namur University in a nonconference tripleheader at University Field. Raider senior pitcher Miranda Gillaspie tossed a five-hitter to lead SOU (18-15) to a 3-0 triumph in Game 1, and after failing to capitalize on several scoring chances in a 3-2 Game 2 setback, the Raiders took the rubber match against the Argonauts (21-23) by a 3-2 count in eight innings. Gillaspie (9-5), the pitcher of record in both SOU victories who has now tossed 19 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run, wiggled out of runner-at-third, two-out jams in the fourth and fifth frames to notch her second shutout of the year in Game 1. Senior all-star first baseman Amy Williams and junior designated player Tanisha Burch each socked RBI hits in the two-run Raider fourth inning, and senior all-star shortstop Kara Ray had a run-scoring double in the fifth to cap the scoring off NDNU hurler Jackie Morales (2-7). In Game 2, Argonaut starter Cierra Kinney gave up a two-run homer to Burch that cut the margin to 3-2 in the fourth, but the freshman kept SOU at bay from there. Operating under international tiebreaker rules and with Rock running at second base to start the bottom of the eighth in Game 3, Ray reached on a fielder’s choice bunt and advanced to second when Argonaut third baseman Anna Garza protested umpire Rob Powell’s safe call at third base. After realizing a timeout had not been called, NDNU then attempted to pick off Ray at second, and following confusion by Argonaut infielders, Rock proceeded to slide into home plate under the tag of catcher Nicole Petagara for the game-clinching run. Women’s Tennis SOUTHERN OREGON 8, MILLS COLLEGE 1 — At Oakland, Calif., Southern Oregon University was only forced into extra sets twice and improved to 7-4. Former North Medford standout Annie Chaney had no difficulty claiming the win at No. 1 singles, losing only one game in her straight set triumph.
