Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend October 29, 2005 Since You Asked Who was Seth Bullis, anyhow? In an earlier Since You Asked column, we learned about the Seth Bullis Reservoir located in the Dark Hollow area. So, who was Seth Bullis, and why does the reservoir have his name? — Andreas H. Seth Bullis was a civic leader known affectionately as "Mr. Medford" for his varied involvement in the community. Among his many activities around town, Bullis served on the Medford Water Commission for 22 years. Betsy Martin, secretary for the water commission, said it is unclear why the commission decided to name the reservoir after Bullis. The 10 million-gallon reservoir was built off South Stage and Dark Hollow roads in 1965 about seven years after Bullis retired from the commission. Advertisement "Perhaps he had been instrumental in pushing the project forward; however, that is speculation on my part," Martin said. Bullis moved to Medford in 1913 to help his family rehabilitate the Sterling Mine, a placer mine (hydraulic mining of aggregate deposits for heavy ore minerals) about eight miles south of Jacksonville. In 1918, he became the superintendent for the Rogue River division of the California Oregon Power Co., now known as Pacific Power. He retired as the division’s district manager in 1952. He served in a bevy of organizations in Medford, including the University Club, the Boy Scouts, the Red Cross, the Masons, the Kiwanis Club, the Medford Chamber of Commerce, thje Elks Club and the Northwest Electric Light and Power Association.
