Social media expert to address Women Entrepreneurs of Southern Oregon Comment By Greg Stiles Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Greg Stiles Mail Tribune Posted May. 7, 2015 at 4:53 PM By Greg Stiles Mail Tribune Posted May. 7, 2015 at 4:53 PM » Social News Never underestimate three words, especially at the beginning of a social media post. Donnie Maclurcan, affiliate professor in social science, policy and culture at Southern Oregon University, will discuss the importance of grabbing a reader's attention at the May session of the Women Entrepreneurs of Southern Oregon at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 14, at Rogue Regency Inn. "Social media is an incredible tool for many organizations, especially for start-up entrepreneurs," Maclurcan said. "You want to design messages for maximum virality, and that's about writing messages and content that connects with people's feelings." Maclurcan has a track record of attracting a social media crowd. He founded a social media alliance that boasts a combined reach of more than 3 million Facebook and Twitter followers. Social media and marketing messengers have a narrow window, Maclurcan said. "They have to focus on their opening line, because the first three words in any message matter the most." In that space, marketers can either win the day or lose a follower. "Whether it's posting on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or Google-plus, it's about engaging with people and creating some emotional response," he said. The common trap, Maclurcan said, is unleashing a string of statistics or an 'A to B' flow and expecting people to get excited. "It's so much more powerful to elicit emotion," he said. "Instead of, 'On Friday, nine community projects are planned, get involved,' it's much better to say, 'The Rogue Valley is about to get even better.' Instead of bombarding people, telling us what to do, we should be thinking about Saturday, ideally with positive emotions." While particular social media platforms may come and go, marketing opportunities will remain. "MySpace didn't make it, but the strong ones continue," Maclurcan said. "What makes for the best messaging doesn't change. Virality doesn't depend on a positive message, but research shows positive emotions generally get the greatest attention." Online dinner and program registration for members is $20. Payment for members making telephone reservations is $23 at the door. Nonmember dinner and program online registration is $25 and $28 at the door. The program-only fee is $15. Online reservations can be made at www.wesoweb.org and the telephone number is 541-292-6326.
