There were frequent author signings, but there was no book fair to bring a large number of authors together in one place. The Phoenix writer set out to fix that that. Now, what’s being billed as the first annual Medford Book Fair is set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in Medford’s Middleford Alley. It is being held in connection with the fourth annual Art in the Alley exhibit there. "I believe there is not another regularly scheduled event like it between Portland and Sacramento," says Sherwood, a London, England, native who writes historical novels. That’s a genre that pops up often among the authors taking in the fair. Jane Kirkpatrick, of near Moro, the best-selling author of 11 historical novels, is to give the event’s centerpiece talk at 2 p.m. Advertisement Kirkpatrick’s "Every Fixed Star" is being published June 17 by WaterBrook Press in a $13.99 trade paperback edition. She lives seven miles from the mailbox and 11 miles from paved roads in eastern Oregon. She is the author of two nonfiction books and nine historical novels. Her first novel, "A Sweetness to the Soul," won the Wrangler Award from the Western Heritage Center and National Cowboy Hall of Fame, an award earned previously by Louis L’Amour, Larry McMurtry and James Michener. Her new novel continues the story of Iowa Indian Marie Dorion begun in Kirkpatrick’s previous novel, "A Name of Her Own." Radio personality Jeff Golden is slated to speak at 11 a.m. A former Jackson County commissioner, Golden, of Ashland, is the author of "Forest Blood," a work of environmental fiction. The authors in the event represent many kinds of books. Bernice Curler of Central Point is another historical fiction writer. Glenora Jean Arnold, the author of a romantic book about time travel, lives in Phoenix. Inspirational novelist Kevin Paglia is from Springfield. Medford resident Jack Halstead, a former hospital administrator, writes inspirational/religious stories. His recently released "The Last Letter," his first novel, is a colorful portrait of the apostle Paul that evokes the savagery of life in ancient Rome in the early days of Christianity. Barbara Allman of Jacksonville writes children’s stories. Novelist Shirley Gooch is from Grants Pass. Mike Holstein co-authored a book on golf. He makes his home in Ashland. Steve Scholl, also of Ashland, is an author of inspirational books and the owner of White Cloud Press, which was in the news recently for a new edition of the Q’uran, a sacred book of Muslims. White Cloud authors attending the book fair are Mari Gayatri Stein, Paul Grilley and Eric Alan. Lorena McCourtney of Grants Pass is the author of eight inspirational romance novels. Travel writer Anne McAlpin is from Jacksonville. Lenor Madruga Chapell is a fiction writer from Rogue River. April Azary Thomas is a fiction writer from Ashland. Margaret St. Clair is another Ashland writer. James Brunner lives in Medford and has written a book about forestry practices. Jean Lengwin of Grants Pass writes family stories about animals. Theresa Gooch of Selma writes children’s stories. Children’s author Sandy Bacon Harding lives in Eagle Point. "There are so many talented writers in Oregon that we were not able to reach," Sherwood says.
