Seniors Henry Cox (113 pounds), Luke Mackey (138) and Wyatt Westfall (170) capped unbeaten runs in the two-day event with championship decisions to pave the way for the Black Tornado, which finished with 326 points to Roseburg’s 481. North Medford also received runner-up efforts from freshmen Tanner Ulrey (106) and Thomas Hamilton (132) and seniors Louis Dix (145) and Cole Hornbrook (160). Placing third for the Tornado were juniors Dominic Deitrick (126) and Justin Geyer (182) and freshman Julian Stone (285). The top three wrestlers at each weight class advance to the 6A state tourney Feb. 26-27 at Portland’s Memorial Coliseum. North Medford nearly collected a few more state qualifiers but sophomores Chase Mitchell (106), Nicholas Winetrout (160) and Joshua Robbins (195) each came up short in their third-place finals. In the championship finals, Cox earned an 8-2 decision over Roseburg’s Austin David and Westfall was an 8-3 winner over Roseburg’s Brandon Jeffers to live up to their No. 1 seeding, while Mackey pulled out a hard-fought 3-2 decision over top-seeded Cody Pickle of Roseburg. South Medford’s top finisher was senior T.J. Roberts, who just missed advancing to the state tourney after placing fourth at 145. CLASS 3A SPECIAL DISTRICT 3 : Cascade Christian junior heavyweight Moses Jackson scored a 3-1 overtime victory over Lakeview’s Jason Trenkle in the championship match to highlight local action at the district tourney at Cascade Christian High. Jackson is one of four Challengers who qualified for the Class 3A state tournament in two weeks. Junior teammate Max Valle finished runner-up at 120 after being pinned in the second round by Creswell’s Blaine Rodolf, while sophomore Gunnar Thompson placed third (126) with a 7-4 decision over Jake Pray and sophomore Ryan Vidlak was fourth (106) after getting pinned in 1:09 by Rogue River junior Johnny Hulseman in the third-place final. The top four finishers at each weight class qualified for the 3A state tourney. Rogue River sophomore Ayden Beck also qualified for state (fourth, 152). Eugene Griffin, a senior, won the 170 title for Illinois Valley and will be joined at state by teammates Dillion St. Onge (third, 113), Christian Engles (fourth, 113) and Ayden Lindsey (fourth, 170). TEAM SCORES: La Pine 288.5, Glide 239, Creswell 189, Lakeview 176, Cascade Christian 86, Coquille 83.5, Pleasant Hill 78, Illinois Valley 73, Rogue River 73. CLASS 2A/1A SPECIAL DISTRICT 3 : At Gilchrist, Butte Falls senior Luke McGonagle became the first in school history to advance to the Class 2A/1A state tournament after placing second at 195 pounds in the district tournament. McGonagle advanced to the championship finals but was pinned by Culver’s Jaiden Jones, then had to fend off Culver’s Cole Little in a wrestleback for second place and won by fall in 5:05 to seal his trip to Portland’s Memorial Coliseum. The top two wrestlers at each weight class qualified for the 2A/1A state tourney. Sophomore Christian Suarez also advanced to the finals at 152 but was pinned in the first round in the championship and then again in a second-place wrestleback and finished third. Spencer Scofield (160) also placed third for the Loggers, while fourth went to Alex Neville (120), Billie Tucker (182) and Collin Stephens (220). Butte Falls, which began offering wrestling last year, placed fourth behind champion Culver with 88 points.
