The Beavers are 10-0 for the first time ever after completing a three-game road trip last week. On Monday, OSU moved from No. 16 into a tie for No. 10 in The Associated Press poll. The Beavers, who impressed voters with a 70-55 thrashing of then-No. 6 North Carolina in Chapel Hill last Tuesday, are tied with Duke. UNC is No. 9. It’s the highest ranking ever for the Beavers, who are idle until taking on No. 8 Tennessee in Knoxville on Sunday. The previous best ranking was 11th on Jan.9, 1996. Oregon State is one of 10 remaining undefeated teams and is the highest ranked team in the Pac-12. Stanford fell from No. 7 to No. 16 after being routed at Tennessee, 59-40, on Saturday. “In one regard we kind of expect that because we work so hard, but to see the hard work pay off and beating these teams, it feels great,” sophomore Gabby Hanson said of the Beavers’ start. Coach Scott Rueck said he is happy to see the players experiencing success in such a big way. “It validates what they’re doing and all their efforts,” he said after the North Carolina win. A big reason for the team’s success has been their approach, something that started after losing to South Carolina in the second round of the NCAA tournament last March. Now the players expect to win games against top-tier teams. “We went from a program that wondered if we could be good, or maybe didn’t think we could be good, to one that now expects to win every night,” Rueck said prior to the season. Tennessee is 9-2 and has won five games since dropping back-to-back road games at Chattanooga and No. 3 Texas on Nov. 26 and 30, respectively. The OSU players have a few days off this week to celebrate Christmas before returning for the Tennessee showdown. “I don’t think there’s going to be a day where any of us are not in the gym,” Hanson said. “We’re going to be in the gym and getting prepared for that and also enjoying ourselves.” The Beavers have won all 10 games this season by double figures, with an average margin of victory of 26.8 points. Before the season, Rueck mentioned junior Samantha Siegner as a player who could make a big jump for the Beavers. The West Albany High grad had a breakout game against Nevada on Saturday with a career-high 15 points on 7-for-9 shooting, and four rebounds. Junior center Ruth Hamblin has picked up where she left off last season, leading the Beavers with 14 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. Hamblin, 6-foot-6, has 34 blocks and needs two more to break Brina Chaney’s school record of 208. Chaney set the record in 123 games. Hamblin has played in 73. Hamblin set the single-season record of 141 as a sophomore.
