So, Governor Brown thnks I should pay as much per mile to use Oregon roads in my little car as those who drive, say, 1-ton pickups? Does she understand the factors that produce road wear? It’s the pounds per square inch exerted on the road’s surface by the contact patches of a vehicle’s tires. So heavy vehicles produce more road wear than light vehicles; ergo, more upkeep. I bought a light, fuel-efficient vehicle (Honda Fit) to help reduce the impact on the environment and infrastructure (and my wallet, eventually). But now she's saying she believes it’s fair that I pay as much as the person who drives a big, heavy vehicle (even though it’s likely that that person’s primary motivation for doing so is about their ego)? I think her idea is neither good nor fair. Why should I subsidize the “heaviers?” Hartley Anderson Medford A sad day It is a sad day when good people do nothing and lose their rights. That is what happened this week when we lost our right to know what is in our food. Sixty-four other countries said no to Monsanto. We should have been first, but even being number 65 would have been a step up than to confirm Congress sold us out. This decision affects everything that has a heartbeat in America. Check to see how representatives voted and this time do something. Linda Zigich Medford Fair disappointing I am so upset with our fair in Central Point this year.  My daughter and I recently went, and there was not much to see anymore in the main building. There was only a handful of booths where it used to be packed upstairs and down. The amusements were packed into one spot, not like it used to be. The food places were good, but too high-priced. The entertainment was OK. The 4-H was good and all the rest. But what I want to know is, why no booths? Doesn't anyone care anymore? Lleta Dubell Central Point Great entertainment This summer, my family has enjoyed Lithia-sponsored free concerts Wednesday nights at Bear Creek Park and Pear Blossom Park. Add in the three concerts I was able to attend at the county fair last week, all for a total of $18 (senior discount). The Lithia Amphitheater is stunning in its beauty with the pond as a backdrop. The $1 (1969) standing-room-only tickets at Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland are a thing of the distant past. Efforts by Lithia and other sponsors revive those cherished memories. Britt, Shakespeare and the Craterian are great places to attend, and thanks  to our valley sponsors, people here can also enjoy very inexpensive musical alternatives, along with these outstanding local landmarks. Jim Work Central Point Get alarms checked This morning I called my Fire District No. 3 and through their program, Brian Murdock, deputy fire marshal, came out immediately and installed the two new smoke alarms I already had and put up one more, then showed me how to use and put in carbon monoxide alarms. His attention to detail and instruction was priceless. One day, it may save my life. I would encourage anyone in the district to have your house checked and your fire alarms checked. It is a free service provided by our wonderful fire personnel. It may save your life too.
