Good equipment, good driving and good luck were all needed to become one of the 20 cars to make it to the start of the feature event. A record 73 late model cars entered the event that began Friday night with qualifying time-ins and heat races. Saturday evening’s races started with an unprecedented E main event with two cars transferring to the D main. The D and C events also transferred two to the next main event, with four cars transferring from the B to the 100-lap lap A main feature event, including local racer Mark Wauge in a modified car. Most of the first half of the race was led by Randy Boyd, but he was passed by Rob Mayea just before the mid-race pit stop. The top five at the pit stop were Rob Mayea, Randy Boyd, Mark Carrell, Rick Hodges and Darren Coffell. Three cars were lost in the first half of the race, leaving just 17 on the track to start the final 50 laps. Advertisement Mayea held on to the lead through several caution flags, which saw more challengers forced to the pits, reducing the field to 12 cars for the final 15 laps. Laps 86 through 90 saw Mayea barely holding off Coffell for the lead. By lap 92, however, Mayea had reestablished a 10-car lead and went on to take the checkered flag. The final few laps saw the race for second heat up between Coffell and Bob Boyd, with Boyd getting past Coffell for second on lap 97. Boyd ended up second followed by Coffell in third. North Medford High senior Jared Morrill won the coveted Rapp Racing pro stock Race of Champions. The race features all main event winners of the current season and past track champions, along with top point finishers to round out a 12- car field and is one of the most popular events of the speedway season. Bob Westcott overtook Brad Alfrey on the 10th lap to win the four-cylinder modified open comp race. On Friday night, Dan Van Acker won the dwarf car main event but it wasn’t enough to edge out Crash Jackson for the Season Points Championship.
