Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend February 1, 2006 Top-ranked Hidden Valley roars past Phoenix Boys Basketball PHOENIX — Even with starting post Jim Sager out with the flu, top-ranked Hidden Valley barely missed a beat Tuesday. The Mustangs rolled to their seventh straight Skyline Conference boys victory without a loss by posting a 59-29 victory over Phoenix. "It was nice to see the guys step up when we were down one of our big guys," Hidden Valley coach Norm Hayter said. "The team really responded." Hidden Valley’s other big man, Cody Crowe, filled the void with Sager out. Crowe scored 12 points and pulled down eight rebounds. "(Crowe) really established himself inside," said Hayter. "They had a tough time stopping him. He did a great job defensively. He had to play a lot more than he normally does." Phoenix (10-9, 3-4 Skyline) trailed only 23-15 at halftime, but the Mustangs (18-1, 7-0 Skyline) broke the game open with a 17-3 burst in the third quarter. Advertisement "We played great man defense, rebounded and took care of the ball," said Hayter. "When we do that, we make life difficult for other teams and we have success." Senior guard Jordan Hayter paced the Mustangs with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Kyler Kirchner added six points, five steals and three assists. For Phoenix, senior guard Dustin Smith had a team-high 12 points. "Phoenix is as athletic as any team we play," said Hayter. "It was a good team defensive effort. Mike D’Olivo, Lawton Leseur and Winston Mueller each tallied 12 points for the Hornets (11-8, 6-1 Skyline). All of D’Olivo’s points came in the first quarter. Leseur also grabbed eight boards, and Colin Stock amassed 12 assists. Ryan Goss played the best game of his career for the Chieftains, scoring 17 points and blocking seven shots. Jessea Mucha scored all eight of his points in the second half for the Cougars (5-13, 1-6 Skyline). Mike Saltenberger dropped in 16 points to lead the Vikings. The Crusaders’ Chris Sutton came off the bench to score nine of his 11 points in the first half, including eight in a two-minute span in the first quarter. Austin Grant and Nash Gambee each added seven points for St. Mary’s (13-4, 6-2 SCL), which is tied with Cascade Christian and Lakeview for second place in the SCL. ST.
