The past two years North Valley was beaten by Klamath Union in the game’s final seconds. The Knights turned the tables on the Pelicans Friday night at Knights Stadium by scoring with six seconds remaining and running in the two-point conversion on a broken play to pull out a 20-19 victory. "It’s been an incredible series with these guys," North Valley coach Todd Willaman said. "It was a fun win." The Knights trailed 19-12 when they took over on their own 35 with about 4½ minutes to play in the game. North Valley drove 10 plays to the KU 9- yard line and was faced with a fourth down situation. Advertisement Junior quarterback Nate Ellis was flushed out of the pocket on the Knights’ final chance and scrambled to his left. At the last moment, Ellis found Josh Makepeace coming across the middle of the end zone and hit him with a scoring strike just inside the sidelines. On the decisive 2-point conversion, Ellis missed the handoff on dive play to Tim Stickler but had the presence of mind to follow the running back through the hole into the end zone behind all-conference tackle Brennan Olander. "It was never an option to go for one," said Willaman. "Our kids stepped up and made plays in the second half." None made bigger plays than Ellis and junior wide receiver Matt Malinoff. After trailing 13-0 at halftime, North Valley took the second-half kickoff and went 77 yards for a touchdown to cut the deficit to 13-6. Malinoff scored a 32-yard touchdown pass from Ellis but also had a 41-yard completion on the drive. The Pelicans got the six points back when Ellis fumbled on a blind-side hit in the pocket and Jon Saxton picked up the ball to go 46 yards for a touchdown. North Valley cut the deficit to 19-12 with 2:51 left in the third quarter on Duane Ogden’s 4-yard TD run. A Malinoff 52-yard reception to the Pelican 4 set up the score. For North Valley, Ellis accounted for 210 yards through the air and Ogden picked up 54 of the Knights’ 128 rushing yards. Saxton gained a game-high 96 yards on the ground and the Pelicans (1-1) had a total of 196 yards in offense. Dollarhide connected with wide receiver Ryan VanCleave to put the Mustangs (2-0) up for good in the second quarter. Kyler Kirchner added a 75-yard punt return to pay dirt in the third and Dollarhide’s 55-yard scamper minutes later put the game out of reach. Moore had only nine carries and Pagnotta 13 as the Cougars gained 424 yards on the ground. Moore and Pagnotta each ran for two scores and Pagnotta threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Moore on a trick play in the first quarter. Larry Ragsdale added a 33-yard TD run for the (2-0). The lone touchdown for Rogue River (1-1) came in the second quarter when Matt Richardson’s 23-yard catch set up a 1-yard touchdown plunge by Ryan Friend. Rogue River’s Vince Reyes rushed for 68 yards on 18 carries and C.J. Hall had seven receptions for 56 yards. Running back Jordan Nelson poked his way into the end zone in the third quarter to extend the Vikings’ lead to 21-6. Nelson rushed for 139 yards on 27 carries, and C.J. Carlin caught three passes for 97 yards for the Vikings (1-1). Domiciliary. The Challengers jumped to a 22-0 first-quarter lead. Wipf scored from 8 yards out with 8:10 left in the opening quarter to complete a 70-yard, six-play drive. He then broke a 49-yard TD run with 4:12 remaining. The Challengers completed a 65-yard, first-quarter scoring drive when Josh Heidegger hauled in a 23-yard pass from quarterback Josh Davis. Cascade rushed for 305 yards and passed for 64. Henley was limited to five first downs and 145 yards. Swearingen got Prospect (2-0) off to a fast start with two first-quarter scores — a 75-yard punt return and a 45-yard fumble return. He only rushed 10 times for his big yardage total and scored once on the ground. He also threw a 60-yard TD strike to Jacob Schultz. The Cougars’ Brandon Bailey added 104 yards on 11 carries as Prospect finished with more than 400 yards on the ground. Chris Stephenson had 102 yards on 18 carries for Butte Falls (0-2) and caught 11 passes for 155 yards. He scored four touchdowns. Dillon Ross passed for 183 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 83 yards for the Butte Falls (0-2).
