Comets to wrestle for dual crown By KRIS HENRY PORTLAND -- If history has taught any lesson, it's to not count out Crater coach Greg Haga and his troops. After Sprague became the talk of the wrestling community for beating the Comets on their home floor for the Crater Classic title last week, Haga and crew refocused their efforts. With the traditional fire burning inside the top-ranked Comets, they defeated Hood River, sixth-ranked Dallas and third-ranked Sprague in separate dual meets at the Oregon Wrestling Classic Friday. The three wins put Crater into today's 8 p.m. final against second-ranked Newberg for the state's unofficial dual-meet crown in Memorial Coliseum. Newberg was a 38-18 winner over fifth-ranked Eagle Point in the other semifinal. "I think we're on the right track," said Crater coach Greg Haga. "We're definitely not there yet, but we're headed in the right direction." After dispatching Hood River (54-13) in the second round and Dallas (41-22) in the quarterfinals, Crater gained a much-anticipated rematch with the Olympians. Paced by Cody Lathrop's pin at 112 pounds, Wes Hunt's 12-10 decision at 119 and Morgan Hawkins' 11-4 decision at 130, Crater put itself in prime position to upend Sprague. "We got three of the first five weights, and that was big for us," said Haga. "We thought we'd be OK in the upper weights, so that kind of set us up." The dominating win by Hawkins was especially sweet because it came over Chris Mortenson, who pinned the Comet in last week's Crater Classic. Justin Godley (152) and Shane Webster (160) picked up technical falls along the way, with Anders Vetch (215) pinning Ben Ostrin to give Crater a 28-25 lead. In the heavyweight final, fourth-ranked Austin Etchison of Crater edged third-ranked Jeff Livingston, 3-1, to secure the victory. Eagle Point had a strong run fall shy against Newberg. The Eagles routed Gresham (47-17) in the second round and then turned away Canby (31-19) in the quarterfinals. Chet McBee (145), Juan Knapp (215) and Blake Cam (275) were each victorious in their quarterfinal and semifinal matchups. Semifinal Results TEAM SCORE -- Crater 31, Sprague 25.
