Calkins of the circuit court in the divorce suit of C.V. Cummings against Mattie Cummings of Medford, the spirit of Europe enters. Referring to the time when Cummings alleged that his wife and mother-in-law broke down the door of his home with an axe, and forced him to flee from a bath with his clothes in his arms to the backyard, the court observes: "The plaintiff can console himself that he put up a good defense but was outclassed in munitions and numbers, and the defendant can console herself with the victory." The court ordered that a decree in favor of the plaintiff be prepared by the attorneys. The findings ... shows a stormy matrimonial campaign. It holds the plaintiff Cummings to be "calm and deliberate, and either truthful or an excellent actor." Mrs. Cummings the findings hold to be "insanely jealous," "morbid," and highly imaginative with inclinations "to view her suspicions darkly." The companionship of the Cummings is compared "to a sultry summer day — sunshine and electrical storms." Quarrels were frequent in the Cummings' household. The evidence the court held showed that whenever domestic troubles arose, Mrs. Cummings "flew to male arms, this being shown in the two incidents of Morgan and Heitshue." The records show that Mrs. Cummings after each separation sought reconciliation with Cummings. The climax in the case came when Cummings hired a Mrs. Jones to be his housekeeper. Mrs. Cummings, gazing through the window, saw her husband and housekeeper "bumping noses." The court holds this to be "silly fooling," but with no evidence of any infidelity. The 11-year-old daughter of Mrs. Jones explained that she was seated upon her mother's lap, engaged in this pastime, and that she asked that "Mama and Mr. Cummings bump noses." The evidence showed that the suggestion was followed out. The court holds that there is no evidence to support Mrs. Cummings' allegations of unfaithfulness. Reference is made to Mrs. Cummings' affair with one Heitshue. Upon finding that he was married and not divorced, she left him. The evidence showed that Cummings maintained quarters for a former wife in Salt Lake City, but that this was only for the purpose of being able to see his boy. The case was replete with sensational allegations and incidents.
