Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend September 30, 2005 This week in history 1945 Medford’s Black Tornado scores its second straight shutout with a 40-0 blanking of Marshfield at Coos Bay. The Tornado line, paced by Darrell Riggs, Nick Greene and Glenn Tingley, play an excellent defensive game during which Marshfield does not get past its own 45-yard line. 1955 St. Mary’s High’s spirited aggregation combines the breaks with rock ‘em, sock ‘em good football to trounce Rogue River, 39-7, in the Jackson County B League season inaugural for both schools. The Medford parochials, spurred by the play of Jim Jones and Laval Meunier, flash a slick, speedy, deceptive, crowd-pleaser offense that gains consistently against the Chieftains. St. Mary’s manages a 241-92 edge in total offense. Eagle runners Steve Modee, Pat Redding and Jim Hardy follow Binker across the finish to help win the meet. 1975 Days Creek fires a one-man show at Butte Falls but it isn’t enough to deprive Loggers coach Tom Rose his first football victory, 24-18. Quarterback Bobby Mecum has a hand in all of the Loggers’ scoring as he posts touchdown runs of 1 and 25 yards and rifles scoring strikes of 33 and 49 yards to Mike Shine and Johnny Henshaw. Ray Norris of Days Creek counters with 335 yards rushing and two scores and throws for another. 1985 Ashland High’s volleyball team provides yet another comeback to remain undefeated at 6-0 in Southern Oregon Conference play with a 14-16, 15-7, 15-5 victory over Roseburg. Playing their trademark solid defense under coach Betty Kimball, the Grizzlies also use 81-for-81 serving — paced by Linda Wright’s 26-for-26 effort — and return 76 percent of Roseburg’s serves to spell the difference. 1995 Crater’s shining star tailback Bryan Berryhill isn’t enough to lead the Comets past Eagle Point as the Eagles buckle down for a 40-13 win that improves them to 3-1 in the Southern Oregon Conference. Berryhill averages 7 yards per carry in rushing for 161 yards and a TD, but he’s overmatched by an Eagle Point team led by Dan Woodward’s four touchdown passes. R.J. Josephson does a little of everything to help lead EP, scoring three TDs, kicking four extra points and coming up with key tackles on defense.
