Comets take eighth place at mat event RENO -- Paced by Shane Webster's first-place finish, the Crater wrestling team capped its run at the fourth Reno Tournament of Champions by placing eighth out of 78 teams. Webster won six matches over the two-day tournament to claim his crown at 160 pounds, along the way topping state champions from California and Utah. Webster either notched a pin or a tech fall in his first five matches at the Lawler Event Center on the University of Nevada campus. He used a 6-3 decision in the finals to take first place. Five other Crater wrestlers placed at the prestigious meet that featured 930 wrestlers, giving the Comets six placers out of the 13 wrestlers who took part in the tournament. "I thought we did a pretty good job," Crater coach Greg Haga said of his team's eighth-place finish. "When you're dealing with the best teams in the country that's pretty good." Justin Godley placed fourth at 145, while Scott Toney finished fifth at 189 and Austin Etchison sixth at 275. Tanner Hillyer (171) and Anders Vetch (215) each placed ninth for the Comets. Crater returns to the mat in Southern Oregon Conference action Jan. 5 against Ashland.
