But don’t tell Grants Pass. Cavemen Steve Draper and Jimmy Blake, hitting Nos. 8 and 9, respectively, drilled back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Grants Pass remarkable 5-4 win over North Medford Saturday. The game was the second of a Southern Oregon Conference doubleheader at the All-Sports Park. North won the first, 6-0. "That’s not their role to drive the ball out of the park, but I’ll take it," Grants Pass coach Stacy Morgan said. "To win a game like that is pretty exciting." Advertisement Draper led off the seventh by nailing the first pitch from Josh Suarez out of the park, making it 4-4. Suarez had previously held the Cavemen to three runs and six hits. Beau Hovland relieved, and Blake’s third extra-base hit of the day on a 1-0 pitch ended the contest. "With the score tied, we’re just looking for a base runner," Morgan said. "Batting ninth, people are going to look past you, but they’re not going to look by Jimmy anymore." Blake hit a solo home run in the fifth to pull Grants Pass within a run after the Black Tornado put up a three-run fourth inning. Mike Mills picked up the complete-game win for the Cavemen. In Game 1, North Medford cruised to a 6-0 win behind 12 strikeouts from junior Cole Rohrbaugh. The left-hander pitched a three-hitter. Hovland went 4-for-4 with two doubles and four runs. The split kept Grants Pass (5-5, 3-3 SOC) in a four-way tie for third place in the SOC, one game behind North (8-3, 4-2). "It keeps us right in the middle of things," Morgan said. "The league is pretty balanced this year. It’s pretty fun to watch." CRATER 3-6, ASHLAND 2-7 — At Ashland, Ashland rallied for three unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh inning of the second game to salvage a split after Grizzly pitching ace Chad Hegdahl (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season in the opener. Brian Ross’ RBI, two-out single provided Ashland (7-3, 3-3 SOC) with the winning run in Game 2. Two Crater errors, a walk and a crucial passed ball on a strikeout with two outs contributed to the Ashland rally. The Comets (3-7, 2-4 SOC) squandered a four-run lead when Ashland scored four times in the fifth inning to tie the game. Rocky Reeser had an RBI double and Arron Nelson added a run-scoring single in the inning. But the Comets grabbed a 6-4 lead in the sixth, highlighted by Joe Kahut’s RBI single. In the opener, pitcher Evan Seegmiller went the distance for Crater, allowing 11 hits with four strikeouts. Crater scored what proved to be the winning run in the fourth on Dan Whitehead’s RBI double. For Ashland, Hegdahl went 3-for-4 and Reeser and Jackson Rowe each added two hits. Depuy struck out seven of the first nine batters he faced. The Eagle Point senior finished with nine strikeouts and allowed three hits, while Bennett fanned six and didn’t issue a walk. The Pelicans (6-5, 3-3 SOC) ended the scoreless game when Chris Anderson tripled down the right-field line to open the sixth and Bryan Rogers hit a sacrifice fly. In Game 2, KU scored seven runs on only two hits in the first inning against starter Ricky O’Callahan. O’Callahan walked three and hit two batters, and the Eagles committed three errors in the opening frame. Sean Anderson fueled the first-inning rally with a bases-loaded triple. For Eagle Point (4-7, 1-5 SOC), sophomore Nick Staller had three hits and two RBIs and O’Callahan added two hits and one RBI.
