That’s fine, but now cars that must use Fir have to maneuver across an extremely rough railroad crossing. Was there any provision to have Sabroso, or the city, improve that crossing, which, by the way, appears to be a spur line serving only the Sabroso plant? — Robert L., Medford Hang on for a bumpy ride, Robert. Rich Gollen, who oversees Central Oregon and Pacific Railroad’s approximate 120 crossings in Oregon, says the company has no plans to improve it. The city says it’s not responsible and suggests that you not use the street. That’s disappointing news to Sabroso Company employees, said Betty Wiest. "We’ve complained to the railroad many times," Wiest said. "We’ve had tires blown out trying to cross those tracks." It’s expensive to improve crossings and often it’s done in conjunction with the city that maintains the road. But city engineer Bob Deuel said the city of Medford is only responsible for maintaining the street and not for upgrading the crossing. "Most people take Holly Street as a detour instead of Fir," Deuel said. When Grape Street was closed, Sabroso paid the cost of a new street, which connects Grape to Fir. There is no connection to Holly at that spot. So, Robert, much as we here at Since You Asked hate to deliver bad news, it looks like the short answer is: You’re out of luck.
