Van Lehn lands first-team all-state nod By KEVIN GOFF Mail Tribune The Southern Oregon Conference’s run through the Class 4A state volleyball tournament didn’t net a championship trophy. In fact, conference champion Roseburg earned the highest of honors with a fourth-place finish among the four SOC squads. A strong showing by the SOC’s elite didn’t go unnoticed, however, with Ashland’s Chelsea Van Lehn receiving first-team all-state recognition as voted by the coaches recently. Senior Van Lehn tacked the all-state honor onto her smorgasbord of accolades obtained this season — including SOC player of the year and first-team all-state tournament honors. "I was pretty surprised by it," said Van Lehn of the recognition. "I also made the all-tournament team, so I knew that would help. I didn’t know for sure, though." Jesuit junior Addie Webster was named Class 4A player of the year, while Crook County’s Rosie Honl grabbed coach-of-the-year honors. North Medford’s Jessica Walters, a sophomore outside hitter, locked up third-team honors, as did Roseburg’s Lindsy Bartholomew. Chey Hale, an Ashland senior, earned honorable mention, while senior Katie Fuller and sophomore Emily Waldron represented the Indians on that list. Van Lehn led Ashland with 176 kills during the regular season to go with a .387 hitting percentage. The 5-foot-10 right-side hitter exited the tournament in style with 13- and 11-kill performances during losses to Gresham and Sheldon, respectively, in the final two matches of her prep career. "It was a fun senior season," added Van Lehn. "I was glad to end it that way." Walters, who slammed down 151 kills during SOC action, posted a team-high 19 kills during North’s three-game stint at the state tournament. In Class 3A, North Valley’s Elaina Renius was named to the first team. Renius, who recently signed on with Gonzaga University to play basketball, posted a mammoth night against Junction City that helped push the Knights into the state tournament. The 6-3 senior picked up 22 kills, eight blocks and five service aces during the subtournament win against Junction City. North Valley finished 1-2 in pool play at state to end the season. Aubrey Schneider was named 3A player of the year for state champion Estacada. Melanie Hambelton was awarded coach-of-the-year honors after leading the Rangers to the state crown. Lakeview’s Jenna Kiely earned third-team honors, while teammate Caitlin Albertson grabbed honorable mention.
