Mail Tribune 100: June 21, 1916 The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jun. 21, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Jun. 21, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News June 21, 1916 HOT LUNCHES AT TALENT SCHOOLS At the annual Talent school meeting held Monday afternoon, Welborn Beeson was retained as director and C. W. Holdridge was again elected clerk. Robert Purves was a close second for director with only one vote less than the successful candidate. H. C. High was also a close second for clerk. An expression from those present authorizing the board to proceed with plans for a large play shed passed with but little opposition. The plans will be submitted later for approval. The present basement is not a very satisfactory basket ball room and will make very good manual training quarters if the new building is erected. The matter of serving hot lunches was also discussed and patrons voiced their approval of having the plan inaugurated this fall. Sentiment also favored the idea of requesting all teachers of the local school to make Talent their home if plans for suitable quarters could be provided. Other subjects of much interest were discussed which tended to make the meeting one of the most successful school meetings ever held at Talent. About thirty patrons were present. ALUMNI PLANNING HAWAIIAN PARTY The Alumni Hawaiian party, which takes place Friday evening at the armory, will probably be the last dance of the season. This fact ensures a large attendance for the affair, as well as the fact that this will be one of the most unique dances yet staged by the alumni. No expense will be spared in an endeavor to make this closing party a huge success in every detail. The music will be a strong feature of the evening, consisting of piano, tango, banjo, violin and drums. The two banjos assure the most "tangful" of dance music, while Hawaiian songs and novelties will be given during the intermissions. Unique programs and clever decorations will help to carry out the Hawaiian atmosphere. All alumni, college and high school students, faculty and a few outsiders are invited to be present.
