Orvey Olan Hunter Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Feb. 4, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted Feb. 4, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News 1/30/1923 1/30/2015 Orvey Hunter entered the kingdom of heaven January 30, 2015 at home with loved ones and family at his side. He was born January 30, 1923 in South Dakota to Raymond M. Hunter and Evelyn L. Hunter. Orvey is survived by his children, Sheila (Hunter) Plunkett, Keith Hunter (Ramona) of Napa, Glen Hunter (Cheryl) of Redding, and Kathy (Hunter) Hill (Tom) of Napa; his brothers, Leonard Hunter of Napa, Larry Long of Stockton, Duane Hunter of South Dakota, and Ralph Buss of Fairfield; nine grandchildren; 10 greatgrandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Orvey is predeceased by his wife, Beatrice Hunter (2009); and sisters, Ina Mae Thrilkill and Leila Wilson. As a young teenager Orvey's family moved to California. After attending school he had several jobs including driving taxi for Yellow Cab Company in Napa, working for the railroad in Suisun, and a short time at Mare Island Shipyard before joining the Army in March of 1943. There he learned the skills of aircraft mechanics. After being discharged from the Army in February 1946 he went to work at Travis Air Force Base for a time before opening an auto mechanics shop in Napa with his brother-inlaw. Later he and his brother became partners in a masonry contractor business. Some years later Orvey returned to Mare Island as a pipefitter acquiring several special ratings throughout his career. Throughout this time period he managed his own cattle ranch business. In 1983 at age 60 Orvey retired from Mare Island. In 1946 he married his sweetheart Beatrice Hagar and soon after they started their family. Though busy with his work career he still found time to enjoy the outdoor activities such as fishing, hunting, camping, and horseback riding with his young family as well as extended family. Orvey always had a strong interest in automobiles and throughout the years he developed an interest in collecting and restoring antique cars and tractors, which remained a lifelong hobby. In 1990 he bought a small ranch in Eagle Point, Oregon and lived there for 22 years until he returned to Napa. He enjoyed traveling to his second ranch in Oklahoma twice a year as well as visiting relatives and enjoying family reunions in other states. In his later years he traveled to Paris, Scotland, and recently to the Amish country in Pennsylvania and the Historical Triangle in Virginia. Orvey's interests expanded to dancing at age 89. While he practiced his new-found activity he met a wonderful woman, Barbara DeMarco, who continued to bring him love and joy throughout his remaining years. His family and friends remember him as a quiet, soft spoken man, slow to anger, who never met a stranger. He was full of wisdom and one of his favorite sayings was "you learn a lot when you listen." Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 6, 2015 at Skyview Funeral Chapel, 200 Rollingwood Drive in Vallejo. Viewing will be held Thursday, February 5, 2015 from 37 p.m. also at Skyview Funeral Chapel. In memory of Orvey Hunter, donations can be sent to Napa Valley Hospice at 414 S.
