Freshman leads Ashland past North ASHLAND - Fabian Garcia-Flores knows how to make an immediate impact. In just his second varsity match with the Ashland boys soccer team, the freshman forward scored in the 22nd minute to boost the Grizzlies to a 1-0 win over North Medford. Ashland (9-2 overall, 4-2 Southern Oregon Conference) guaranteed itself a postseason berth with the victory. Garcia-Flores' game-winner came courtesy of a well-executed build-up that included several Grizzlies. Junior midfielder Trevor Peterson knocked a free kick to senior forward Jesse Hodges, who passed toward junior forward Fletcher Beaudoin. Rather than control the ball himself, Beaudoin dummied, letting the ball slip by to Garcia-Flores. After beating one defender, Garcia-Flores drilled a shot to the far post from 18 yards out for his second varsity goal in two matches. "He's a very intelligent soccer player," Ashland coach Eisa Tiaa Tou Tou said of his freshman find. "He reads the game, he's humble and he integrates well with the upperclassmen." The Black Tornado (7-3-2, 4-2) put the pressure on in the second half, but Grizzlies junior goalkeeper Joshua Dunn was up to the task in keeping eight shots on goal out of his net. "It was a good game," said North coach Rich Garcia, whose squad enjoyed an 11-10 shots edge overall. "Both teams played really hard." The Tornado end the regular season Tuesday, playing host to South Medford at 4 p.m. at Hoffbuhr Field in a match that boasts postseason implications as well as the usual rivalry hype. Ashland finishes with Eagle Point, the SOC's last-place team. SOUTH MEDFORD 3, ROSEBURG 1 - Senior fullback Adam Walport scored in the 12th minute on a long shot that was deflected into the goal by a Roseburg player, jump-starting South Medford to the SOC victory at Fichtner-Mainwaring Park. Midfielder Daniel Hathaway scored in the 42nd minute off an assist by Corey O'Neill, and Jon McCollum made it 3-0 when he connected in the 64th minute from 18 yards out. Roseburg averted a shutout when Danny Arronte chipped South Medford backup goalkeeper Dave Coleman in the 70th minute. The victory improved the Panthers to 5-1 in the SOC and 11-2 overall heading into Tuesday's 4 p.m. match against North Medford at Hoffbuhr Field. GRANTS PASS 3, CRATER 0 - At Grants Pass, Brandt Minor scored on a header seven minutes into the match and added a goal in the 53rd minute to lead Grants Pass over Crater. Dan Briggs notched the other goal on a penalty kick for the Cavemen, who ran their SOC record to 2-4 and their overall mark to 6-7. Outside fullback Zach Fogelquist and goalkeeper Matt Lamont anchored the Grants Pass defense. KLAMATH UNION 5, EAGLE POINT 0 - At Eagle Point, Klamath Union scored four goals in the first half and went on cruise control in the final 40 minutes to thump Eagle Point. Ricardo Gurrero, Krister Balme, Luis Garcia and Travis Baker connected on first-half goals for the Pelicans (7-0 SOC). Dan Carney scored Klamath Union's second-half goal. Thomas Ussary, who came onto the field in a helicopter to celebrate his 17th birthday, had eight saves in goal for the Eagles, who fell to 0-6 in the SOC and 3-9-2 overall. Girls NORTH MEDFORD 3, ASHLAND 0 - The Black Tornado did all its scoring in the opening 16 minutes to remain undefeated in the SOC. First, junior central midfielder Lisa Munyon volleyed home a corner kick from senior fullback Julia Clark in the 12th minute. Second, sophomore forward Kadi Driver finished an assist from sophomore forward Whitney Major in the 15th minute. Third, senior midfielder Emily Schuler found the net on a long drive in the 16th minute. North (9-2 overall, 6-0 SOC) can clinch an outright SOC title by defeating South Medford in Wednesday's regular season-concluding match at Fichtner-Mainwaring Park. The Grizzlies (1-5 SOC) were eliminated from postseason contention with the loss. SOUTH MEDFORD 4, ROSEBURG 0 - At Roseburg, Colleen Salisbury scored on a pair of direct kicks and Kelsey Jones and Amber Stevens added one goal each as South Medford cruised past Roseburg. The Panthers led 3-0 at halftime. Whitney Grant and Katie Casebeer helped a stingy South defense hold Roseburg to seven shots. The Panthers had 29 shots on goal. South moved to 6-0 in the SOC and 10-2-1 overall, while Roseburg fell to 2-4 in conference play and 6-6-1 overall. The Panthers meet North Medford for the SOC title Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Fichtner-Mainwaring Park. CRATER 4, GRANTS PASS 3 , double OT - At Central Point, Kassiday Reina weaved through three defenders and knocked in the winning goal two minutes into the second overtime as Crater edged Grants Pass in an SOC thriller. Reina finished with a hat trick as the Comets improved to 2-4 in SOC play. Crater took an early 2-0 lead in the first half on goals by Reina and Sarah LaFontaine, but Grants Pass tied the game in the second half on goals by Natasha Crook and Tara Luker. Crater went back on top on another goal by Reina, but Grants Pass tied it at 3-3 on a goal by Chesney McHan late in regulation play. Reina, who has been hampered much of the season with a back injury, stole the ball in the second overtime and beat a trio Cavers before scoring from 12 yards out. The victory lifted Crater to 7-6-1 overall, while Grants Pass fell to 3-3 in the SOC and 8-3-1 overall. KLAMATH UNION 3, EAGLE POINT 0 - At Klamath Falls, Brandi Bocchi, Ericha Hager and Breanna Hackett scored to keep the Pelicans (3-3 SOC) in control of their own postseason destiny. The Eagles fell to 1-5 in the SOC and 6-6-1 overall. Mail Tribune Home | Ottaway Newspapers, Inc. | Dow Jones & Co., Inc. | Privacy | Contact Us Copyright 2001 Mail Tribune, Inc.
