The Indians (19-2, 11-0 SOC) defeated Ashland, the preseason favorite in a coaches poll, 57-44 on Tuesday to take a three-game lead with three to play. Ashland and North Medford are 8-3. "Our kids have an understanding of what they’re playing for," said Roseburg coach Bob Feasel. "We didn’t let up. We’re going to finish strong." Jori Grady scored 22 points for the fourth-ranked Indians, who made their charge in the second quarter by outscoring the Grizzlies 13-4. "We tightened up defensively," said Feasel. "The kids really did a great job. We defended the perimeter well, which is what you have to do against Ashland because they shoot the ball so well." Kristen Bitter had 10 rebounds and Grady eight as the Indians enjoyed a 41-18 edge on the boards. "They hurt us with their bigness," said Grizzly coach Steve Humann, who also was impressed with Grady. "She played a very good all-around game. We don’t match up with them very well." Ashland trailed by 12 points at one stage but closed the deficit to 43-38 in the fourth quarter. It had to foul, however, and Roseburg made its free throws. "Roseburg has a very good team," said Humann. "We didn’t play all that badly." Marla Morin scored Ashland’s four points in the second quarter and finished with 20 points and eight rebounds despite having suffered from the flu for two days. Alysse Carlson added nine points and four assists. ASHLAND (44) — Morin 20, Hansen 6, Huyett 6, Golling 0, Carlson 9, Sobolik 7, Roupp 0, Hasty 0, Badenhop 0, Hill 0. Totals: 16-45 8-9 44.
